I got my first tat about 4 days ago and it's a half sleeve, so the artist told me to use A&D for first few days and then use lotion (unsented). I have been doing this, but tonight when I was taking a shower I noticed there is some skin peeling off. I was wondering if this is normal, or if it's caused by excessive use of lotion/ointment (I've been putting the ointment on approximately every 2-3 hours). Any help is greatly appreciated, as I really love my tat but don't want to mess it up. Also, I haven't been peeling it off, but when I patted my arm dry and put the ointment on, some of the skin came off. Again, thanks for any help!!

Also, when I said skin I mean that it's the skin, but it's the same color as the tattoo, so that's why it concerns me. And it's only peeling in one particular part of the tattoo

When I get a tattoo, I wash it in the morning, and then at night before I go to bed. You are supposed to only put cream on it 2-3 times a day, but I put cream on mine when they seem really dry, but only a thin layer, too much cream is not a good thing for a tattoo. Peeling is normal, and there will be a little color in the skin that's peeling, that's normal too. Peeling when you are patting the tattoo dry is normal too. Sounds like you are doing everything right, just remember not to scratch if it gets itchy, just slap it a little and that should take the itch away. Good Luck!! =]

No, peeling is normal. Don't worry unless it gets infected or it starts peeling excessively. The tattoo artist should have told you this...

Meanwhile, keep applying lotion, and instead of washing your tattoo while in the shower, do this: Take a shower as usual, but instead of washing the tat, ignore that area. Then, after your shower, use a washcloth and antibacterial soap an pat-wash the tat area.

Ok, I just got my 1st tat on Monday night but I was told peeling is normal. Its just the layers of dead skin peeling away from the tattooed area. The best thing is to keep doing what you have been doing. DO NOT EVER peel it...let it peel on its own. The skin will come off when you apply stuff which is ok...just make sure not to pick at it or anything like that.

It will peel and color will come out in the skin that's peeling off. Keep doing what you are doing and if you have any doubts at all call and ask your artist if you are over using the ointment and lotion.

Peeling is perfectly normal. It is just how your body reacts to the new substance. It will also become itchy but don't itch it or try to peel the skin off. That can ruin the tattoo. You need to keep the tattoo moist for awhile so putting the lotion on every 2-3 hours is good.

I know this might be a tiny bit late for you but it might help others, but do not use A&D if you are allergic to wool. It can make everything much worse. I personally can not use A&D the one tattoo I used it on faded horrible, peeled, and I broke out in small bumps around the tattoo area.

My all time favorite product was called Salvation tattoo balm. It came from my local organic food store, and I don't even know if its still around, but I would recommend it to anyone. It is made from hemp seed oil, and I didn't lose any color at all

I just got mine a few days ago too! But the artist told me to only wash it two-three times a day! and to only put a little ointment on it. You might be washing to much, there are things our bodies do to heal that washing it to much messes up. But it is normal for some skin to peel, its healing. But I'd say to cut back the washing and excessive ointment. :)

I asked this about a month ago, because my boyfriend and I got our first tattoos, and when I was rubbing in the ointment, his started peeling (more than mine was, because his is 10 times bigger than mine) and everyone said it was fine. His tattoo looks great, so it doesn't effect it. Just make sure you're not *peeling* it, and don't pick off the scabs. :)

tattoo's usually peel. Just make sure that you don't pick at it cause it will take the ink out of your tattoo. I have 4 tats and they all have peeled some. It just means that it's healing. Just don't mess with it and it should heal just fine. There addicting so watch out.

well if its just the skin and not the ink or tattoo itself its alright....just keep applying the lotion and if you feel your skin is dry keep using the A&D ointment. if you have any questions or concerns you can always call your tat artist. thats what they are there for
