Humans have the ability of consciousness. An ability no other being on this planet has.

With this knowledge of life and death there is a need to have an explanation for everything unknown i.e. what happens after death, why we suffer..

When a human is overwhelmed they often seek a higher power, even if that higher power is based on the same questions death brings.

Then they feel a comfort from shaking the mortal coil and filling the space that is left as a question.

If it was not for the offer of everlasting life and the avoidance of hell humans would not believe in anything but morality.

That's why prisoners, drug addicts and people in a confused lonely place choose a higher power.

I believe God is aware of the risk reward aspect of this way of thinking. That must pose an issue at some point.

Back in "the day" religion was just what the shaman said you needed to know and do to live a long, healthy life. It *was* science and as such it conferred an advantage on adherents (imagine having each generation discover that *some* pork has trichinosis worms and never quite having enough time in one generation to determine why it kills). No, religion was humble, as was science at one time. At some point - and personally I think it was when we started to write these things down - people started to think the word was more important than the result. That science became ossified and antithetical to real (fluid, perpetually changing) science. Today nobody expects answers on the forefront of science from religion.

That's my take on it anyway.

Religion isn't the same as having a belief in something. Being religious doesn't mean being part of some denomination, or sect of followers of a deity. My belief in the God of the Jews, Yahweh, and the Trinity doesn't make me religious. Religiousness is the practice of a certain activity at a regular frequency.

No, religion is "often" a response to the faith of the believer; the only "situational religionists" I know of are Catholics, and I can say this with full authority, having been one for eighteen years.I have been free of such double-dealing for nineteen years, and I now consider myself merely a Christian, without the trappings of denomination to bind me to anything but the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God bless you.

I feel it stems largely from our creation, & what we were created for... We Are & Were Created By God! Jehovah Elohim... The God Of The Bible, Maker Of Heaven & Earth... Who Sent His' Only Begotten Son Jesus To Die For Our Sins. We Were Created For Intimacy With That Creator. Someone I work with asked me one time what i was reading & when i told her she was kind of stand-offish, saying, I'm not religious! To which I responded, neither am I, stating that Jesus never came advocating religion; but something quite different, relationship. Relationship with the very Creator that made us. We were made to love, serve, praise & worship Him... Pascal said, Within The Heart of Man, Is A Chasm; A God-Shaped Hole. A Hole That None Will Or Can Fill Save God, And God Alone. Religions largely, are birthed from some people's attempt to justify sinful behavior... trying to form and make a God/god for themselves that they themselves can manipulate & control; a god to suit themselves... so that they can do as they will without fear of judgment... live without consequence. At large religions were sometimes birthed, because some wanted to feel, to make of themselves to at least in appearance appear to be wiser, and more well-known... than they were actually. To get a name for themselves... build a name for themselves, some use religion as a tool to manipulate and keep under wraps whole civilizations... peoples.
We were created to believe in something, someone rather; and that someone, is God! To Worship Something & we will... We Will live our lives as either those who feel they have a home... or as they, who feel themselves to be orphans; and who do not have a home. We will live our lives being subject to someone's mission and rarely, if ever; is it our own: we will either be in subjection To The Father Of Lights Mission; God's Mission or; we come into agreement with the father of lies; and the first spiritual orphan, satan, the devil... And thus' be subject to his' mission & agenda. So you tell me; why ? I feel that I have poorly answered the Q set before me... Hope I gave you some food for thought at least! God Bless & Good Night!
