Have you heard of the "Theology of the Body"? It is a series of audiences given by Pope John Paul II on human sexuality. Most people believe that the church has a very stringent, puritanical view of sex and the body, but that is a gross misunderstanding! The late Holy Father went so far as to say that sexual climax is a glimpse of heaven! And we are against artificial (unnatural) means of contraception, because it creates a barrier between the couple. When you withhold your fertility from your spouse, you cannot be a complete gift to one another. One of the great benifits of natural means of birth control (NFP) is the the respect and unity it fosters within the marraige. Sex is a sacred, life giving act, not only because it brings forth children, it also gives life to the couple. I'm so glad you posted this question! So many people, especially Catholics, have a skewed understanding of the Church's teachings on sexuality. If you haven't checked out "Theology of the Body", I highly recommend it, along with "Love and Responsibility" also by JP II. There are some wonderful, beautiful observations in these works, not only about sexuality, but about gender and identity. And you'd be surprised at what he has to say about women! But that's another subject altogether....:)

I think that the Church's teaching on sex are a gross perversion, as well as criminally stupid: people die from following the prescriptions of the Church. The thesis that sex must be for the purpose of potential procreation shows a complete misunderstanding of the role of sex in human life: h. Sapiens is one of a few species in which the female is sexually receptive at all times, rather than just when fertile, and the reason for this is clear: sex helps hold the family together, so that the offspring can be more successfully raised to adulthood. This is characteristic of some other species, all of which have long maturation times and much parental supervision. Of all the reasons that I detest the teachings of the Church, this is by far the most important.

The Catholic Stands on sex is strictly on the couple who are ceremonially married. By ceremony it does not mean strickly by the Church; even through the mayor or Judges would do as long they are licensed to act as married couple.
The stand of the church on as against contraception or abortion is firm and irrevocable. Planned parenthood may includes the women cycle to be aware of. Another step is to encourage women to work on their career for as long as they can enjoy and marry late in their age so that they can have a probable and possible limited number of children. As for abortion they are still discussing the moral issue on the matter. It may take more time to come out with their choice on when it is necessary to be decided on.

Sex between two People who love each other is incredible way to express that love regardless of gender...I don't care what the Catholics say.
Contraception is responsible in an overpopulated world.
People will be people so abstinance is just not going to always be adhered to and contraception is a logical preventative measure.

Right on!
There's a good book called, "The Good News about Sex and Marriage". I highly recommend it because of it's Q&A format, it's easy-read layman's terms explanations.
It will help you explain the Church's teaching to others and you'll most likely learn things you didn't know before.

When I had my marriage blessed by the Catholic Church, one of the questions I was asked when I was interviewed by the priest, was whether I believed that the sole purpose of marriage was for procreation. My answer was that it was not. A relationship with our Creator was the primary purpose for marriage, God-Husband-Wife, in a divine "mystery" of a triangle, with children being the fourth side of that triangle. He was willing to rephrase the question.
