If the smell and strength of cats urine has changed then should see a vet

it means it's a cat

All cat's urine has an ammonia smell. IT's strong and VERY hard to get out of furniture and carpet.

Even harder, because cat's noses are SUPER sensitive, and if they smell an "accident" they had (even though you've cleaned it up) it will encourage them to go there again. THere ARE some enzyme cleaners that can remove the smell well enough that the cat can't even smell it anymore.

BUT, if the smell is stronger than usual, it could be a health problem. IF this is your first time getting a cat, or having exposure to cat urine, then that's just the way cat's pee smells. But if you've had this kitty awhile, and are now noticing a DIFFERENCE in the urine smell, might be time for a check-up at the vet.

.
When urine begins to break down, it will smell like ammonia. If you have a strong smell coming from your litter box, it is likely that the box is quite dirty. When you have two cats, it is best to have at least two boxes that are cleaned daily if using scoopable litter or changed twice weekly for regular clay litter. If the litter box is getting dirtier than usual, this might be a sign that one cat or both is urinating more frequently. This may mean that a urinary tract infection is present. If you believe that urination has become more frequent, then a veterinary visit is in order and easily to treat.

Strong smell of ammonia in cats urine - what does this mean?

A smell of ammonia in cat urine is natural however, if it is overly intense, I'd take a close look at what you are feeding. Either that or clean the litter box more often. That usually does the trick.

Don't all cats urine have a strong ammonia smell?

My older cat's urine gave off an extremely strong odor of ammonia as her age-related kidney failure advanced. If your cat is older and this is happening all the time, I'd take it to the vet for a blood test to check kidney function. Though kidney failure cannot be reversed, some things can be done to support the cat and slow its progression.

Is your cat male or female? If it's an intact male, get him neutered. Otherwise, your cat should be taken to the vet. right away. The strong ammonia smell could be caused by any number of medical problems.

Is it more than usual? Is your kitty a boy or girl? Unspayed girls in heat and cats or both genders spraying (small amounts of urine that are usually on vertical surfaces to mark their "territory") can also smell very strongly. If the smell is much stronger than usual, then see a vet, and I will agree with the answer #1 above! Good luck!
