I travel a lot with my friend for work, and he's always leaving his trash in my car. The other day I told him to stop leaving his trash in my car and to clean it up. We got into a argument and he said that he was a adult and that I'm not to tell him to do anything, I'm to ask him and say please otherwise he will rebel and not do it. He said it comes from when he was a kid and was told to do something he would rebel. He said that he's a adult now and he deserves and demands the respect he should get and that he won't do anything if he's not asked polietly. This is HIS trash that I'm telling him to clean up. I've asked him in the past, he said that I need to ask him every time. I don't think I should have to ask him to clean up his own mess every time, who's right?

He doesn't have a drivers license right now, it was suspended..Also, he wanted to work at Wendy's so long and finally quit and is making better than his usual $6/hr but doesn't have a car, which is why he's traveling and working with me. I'm trying to help him out with getting started.

Its as simple as this :

"forget" to pick him up. He will be a little upset at being left behind ask why and then you say...

Drum roll...

"I had to go early as this "jerk" I know, keeps leaving his garbage in my car, and I had to go clean it before work.'

As an adult, you should not have to ask OR tell him. He should do it automatically. The behavior he's showing is extremely childish.

Rather than having a daily battle with him over the trash, set up some rules. Since it sounds like fast food trash, I would not let him eat food at all in the car or do anything else that generates trash. If you stop and get something together, wait until you get home to eat it, and force him to do the same. That way, there should be no trash.

Oh, is he paying you? If not, he really should be. If after these efforts he leaves trash, charge him extra for a "cleaning" fee.

If he was an adult like is says he is, he shouldn't have to be asked to clean up after himself. I hang out with my friends a lot and sometimes carpool with two of them (ages 19 & 20) and I've never had to ask them to clean up after themselves a single time. I say you tell him to respect you and not act like a child... given that some children like my niece age 5 always gets her trash from my car anytime I take her anywhere.

Tell him, you would not have said anything if he had some respect for you and your car. If it is not necessary to travel with him, then don't . Let him to drive himself and clean up his own mess. Let him know that this is your car, and you do not have to ask him to clean up his mess, he is an adult and should know better.

You shouldn't have to ask him every time. It's rude of him to want to leave his mess in your car and it's childish of him to insist that you ask him every time. He knows you don't want his garbage in your car so he should simply clean up after himself without you needing to ask him to all the time. He should be grateful that you give him a ride to work and he should respect the rules you set for your car.

If he's so much an adult, then why is he using the excuse that he used as a kid to 'rebel'?
Just dont pick him up. Simple. Effective.
And if you do continue to drive him make damn sure he pays you for it! If he doesnt want to clean up after himself then charge him for that too.
If he caught public transport would he be leaving his rubbish everywhere? Unless he is a total pig, no. But maybe he is!

If he was adult he wouldn't have left trash in your car to begin with. Tell him to pick up his crap right now or no more rides for his lazy a.ss.

Quit giving him rides; he doesn't deserve a ride from you if he can't respect your car.
