There are many types of fasting. Sometimes we can just drink liquids, sometimes we commit to cutting out tv or internet, sometimes we say we will not eat a certain food we love. It depends on why you are fasting. One thing is certain, that when you fast, you must not let other people see that you are doing it. The bible says wash your face and put on a smile. don't broadcast your intentions but seek your father's face during that time. If you are offered some item you are fasting from just say "no thanks" A fast is usually done to seek Gods will in a situation, or to ask for a specific thing to be done. It is whatever you commit to. hope this helps.

5 days is an unhealthy amount of time to fast. We fast for two meals, and yes, that means that you eat or drink nothing. We begin and end the fast with a prayer During the time of the fast, we meditate, we ponder, we pray, we study scripture, we attempt to feel closer to God. And after make sure that you eat a LIGHT meal so that you don't get sick!

if u have never fasted before 5 days could be a bit much to start with. there are many different fast u could do. u could do a food fast where u drink anything. there is a media fast where u only listen to and watch things pertaining to ur beleifs. then u have what is called a daniel fast where u only eat and drink beans and water for 21 days. anything u ingest is something u can fast as long as its a true sacrifice. i'm addicted to cafeine and i just finished a cafeine fast.

To fast means "to abstain".
There are different types of fasts mentioned in Scripture, such as:
1) The normal fast - abstaining from just food, but not water, for a period of time (such as Jesus did in the wilderness).
2) The absolute fast - abstaining from both food and water (normally never done for a period of more than 3 days). ex: Esther & the Jews
exception - Moses & Elijah who were both supernaturally sustained by God.
A person would have to be very positive it's God leading them to undergo an absolute fast of more than 3 days.
3) The Partial Fast - abstaining from certain foods, such as meats (ex: Daniel & his 3 companions).
I would not recommend you undergoing an absolute fast of more than 3 days, as you would be seriously endangering your health.
I'd start off slow, with say a normal fast of 1 day, and then take it from there.
Also, you need to ask yourself: "Why am I fasting?" What do I hope to get out of it?
A good book to read would be, "God's chosen Fast" by Arthur Wallis. I seriously recommend it.
Don't listen to extemist views which tell you that there is only one way to fast.
Pray, research the information, and then start.

The purpose of a fast is two-fold, although they are related:
1) To cleanse oneself physically of any impurities that might have accumulated in one's body.
2) To cleanse and fortify onself spiritually, since it takes dedication to maintain a fast when hunger kicks in. In addition, a fast demonstrates to both God (whichever you believe in) and ourselves that there is something greater in which we believe in which our 'suffering' or discomfort is worth offering up to.
So, the best fast is the one that you are most likely to maintain for the time you set for. It is usually better to fast for a shorter period of time, but do it more completely (water only) than to fast for a longer period of time but to give in regularly. What God wants is quality of your dedication and sacrifice, not quantity. In other words, it is better to sprint 50 ft with God solely in your thoughts than to walk 500 miles while only occasionally thinking about him/her/it.
