why do living things need nitrogen?

Nitrogen is a critical component of amino acids, and amino acids are made into proteins, hormones, neurotransmitters and other vital molecules.

As we are made from the available material on the earth, and 70% of our atmosphere is Nitrogen, it would seem that Nitrogen would be fundamental in ourselves.
