Alright so whats up with everybody being on antidepressants now? I mean even kids in my french class (around 14 years old) are taking them! I dont think they antidepressants 50 years ago, so since then did almost everybody's nerve/brain cells just all of the sudden get problems transmitting serotonin correctly?

Please check out the answer that "Karma" gave...very true! Antidepressants are ridiculously over-prescribed in children and also adults. Not to say that they aren't necessary for some extreme cases...very extreme in my opinion. Remember that it's not your classmates fault, it is their doctor and parents fault for accepting a medicinal quick fix. I hope you can try to "school" your classmates on this reality...just letting them know that they are not crazy and that they should take very seriously the fact that they are on antidepressants. Fourteen years old is so very young in my opinion to be forced into taking those things. You're a smart kid.

I think they are woefully over-prescribed often, especially in children. It seems to me, these days, that parents are using them to subdue their children rather than parenting.

" Oh, little Johnny is acting up in school? Ok, we'll take him to the shrink and see what they can do." Of course, that shrink needs to make some money, so guess what he does about it.

It's sad really, that some parenting styles no longer revolve around good communication, limits and boundaries, or discipline. Not everyone suddenly developed a serotonin problem over the last 50 years, they've developed a lazzez-faire type of parenting that is backfiring on them.

Folks have battled clinical depression for centuries. It's not something you can "deal with" or "snap out of it".
Many people who suffer depression consider suicide...while others end up killing themselves.
WHY are so many people taking meds?
It's not that MORE people have it....it's just that we are getting better at diagnosing it and people who would have suffered needlessly years back can actually receive treatment and live normal, happy lives.

So what's up with everybody being on cholesterol medication now? So what's up with everybody being on heart medication now? Does that mean that people didn't need cholesterol medication 50 years ago? Does that mean people didn't need heart medication 50 years ago? Whenever medical research finds new ways to diagnose conditions, and new medications are found to work on those conditions, naturally you have more people taking medications to help their conditions.

Yeah, people are too lazy to work on their own problems. A magical happy pill is an easy way out and also a great excuse for when they don't behave right.

Drug company needs more money and the pusher's are our doctors. I used to get a swift kick in the butt and I straighten right up. Now our kids have to be sedated in order to behave and learn. Give me a break!
