Windows Vista is Microsofts latest operating system. Originaly codenamed Longhorn it has been in production for the last few years and was given a bit of an early release as it still contained quite a large number of bugs and driver errors. Many people harp on about it being really bad but that is only cos they are usualy trying to do stuff with it that was designed for XP. Vista is almost a total winows rebuild from the ground up so it contains very few elements from XP and those that are similar to XP have been totaly redesigned so many features dont function properly woth XP compatible software.
Microsoft is working hard and are releasing fixes and updates almost daily and many programs and software companies are releasing new versions of their software that are Vista compatible.
There are multiple version of Windows Vista, each with different features designed to suit different computer users. the version of Vista available are:
Vista Home Basic
Vista Home Premium
Vista Business Edition
Vista Ultimate
Home basic is vust the vista operating system without all the bells and whistles so it is just an operating system with the bare minimum for you do go about your every day computing tasks with decent security
Home premium is an expansion on basic but it includes Vistas major feature which is the Aero interface which uses transparencies and 3D desktop features so it needs a dedicated graphics card (not an onboard one) home premium also has a lot of backup features for the home user so they dont lose their data
Business edition is just that...Vista for businesses, it also features the Aero interface (I have no idea why) and has greatly improved security, backup and management features and excelent networking capabilities.
Vista Ultimate is the full deal...you get the works with it...Aero, Security, Backup tools, management utilities and all the other little bits and pieces. For ultimate you want a decent computer that is capable of all of this. Ultimate is realy for the computer enthusiest.
All those stories you hear about people having problems are just people who dont take the time to read the instructions. I have only had one problem with Vista and that was with my graphics drivers as I didnt install the right ones because I use a laptop I have to use the drivers provided by microsoft as opposed to the ones provided by the manufacturer. I have uninstalled Vista for the time being as my laptop isnt realy powerful enough to run it and to do what I want to do in it (it could probably do what i want to but just not as well as I would like it to)
In short if you do plan to get Vista, firstly be aware of the price tag and secondly just give microsoft time to sort out all the bugs, when they release the first service pack most of the problems will be solved

First off, there was no windows 2003 or 2007. Vista is Microsoft's newest operating system. The major complaints right now are just incompatible drivers (which manufacturers are working on) and high system requirements (similar to the jump that Windows XP required from users upgrading from Windows 98 or 2000.

Well, I have Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade and to me it seems just like XP with more annoying security controls and bugs. I suppose its good if you want to regulate what your children do on the computer, but I'm the only one who uses my computer. I prefer XP myself but I know most software will probably start gearing itself toward Vista so I'll keep it as my operating system.
