im very light skinned--with freckles. i burn very easily in the sun and my mom recently bought me 10 tanning visits for 20 dollars. Now, after i use these i dont plan to tan anymore so my question is if i just go for these ten and get some color, im not going to get any weird diseases or anything like cancer, right?

If you are light skinned & only have 10 visits then the whole thing is pointless. It would take 10 visits just to get you started...much less see any color. If you don't plan on going anymore after you've used those, I say don't even go to begin with. But in reality..you probably won't be affected by any diseases at all in just 10 visits.

You most likely will not get any disease or cancer. However, getting in a tanning bed doubles the likelyhood of contracting skin problems and skin cancer. The UV radiation penetrates your skin and is very harmful. Even people in the natural sun have a risk, but the tanning bed increases your risk because the rays are directly hitting your body and they are high powered to help tan you faster. I would say it would be fine to do 10 visits but don't make it a regimen or habit. Good Luck!

Probably not, but it's not out of the question, it could happen, Also make sure you start out on a light bed at a low amount of minutes and then work your way up so you don't burn and irritate your skin. I'm fairly light skinned with freckles and I started at 5 minutes and gradually worked my way up to 17 minutes. I'm tanning before vacation, so I go about 2-3 times a week for the past three weeks. Not really that great of an idea but who knows now a days, everything is bad for you. Just be careful and use a good lotion!!

You have Celtic skin as i have, pale, freckles, burn easy, which has a high risk factor for skin cancer. I am a mother with girls who have the same skin as i do, never, ever would i allow them to lay on a tanning bed. They slap on sunscreen all year round and use either moisturizers or base/foundation make up year round with a SPF of 30 as our dermatologist advised. We also use the self tanning moisturizers Jergens make them and we get quite a good colour with it. And have also done the spray tan thing for special occasions. We all feel the risk is not worth taking, plus we all have good skin, i am in my 40's and have never really done the tanning thing, i am always being told how good my skin looks as i do not have any wrinkles or sun spots. Pale can be fun you know!!!

There is no way to determine to what degree you will harm your skin. I have light skin and freckles, and I would never go to a tanning salon. I would get a sunburn and more freckles, and whatever "color" I got would fade. A waste of money.

Lots of models these days are very pale.

And another thing--tanning gives you wrinkles and worse:

It's called "photo-aging" and women spend big bucks to get rid of it.

Is it high risk? Yes. Nobody can tell you for certain you will or won't get cancer. You do increase your risk by tanning.
