You may have too many processes running in the background, taking up all your memory. When your memory is full, the computer has to store some things on your hard drive to free up memory and then open the program you are trying to load.
To disable some background processes and to see which ones you should disable you need to check what programs are running at startup. First I use this site:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
to compare what programs are in my msconfig startup tab. Just check what you have running, and see what it is by finding it on that site, and turn it off if you don't want/need it. Usually you will want to leave any Firewall/antivirus programs/components enabled, as well as any drivers, such as NVIDIA/ATI/Intel/AMD, etc.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like you are loading too much at startup. Here is a list of guidelines given to me by someone more knowledgeable than I:
Many users are not aware of how much RAM is used by wallpaper and/or a screensaver full of graphics. They run in the background and consume memory. (I have only 512mb RAM, run multiple programs simultaneously, and have set my wallpaper and screensaver to blank.)
I don’t do games, but I do know they are primarily graphics which need and use a lot of memory.
- How many programs do you load at startup? Maybe you should check it out and ensure you are running just what you need on a daily basis. For anything else you can wait a minute until it loads.
To do this: cl Start, cl Settings, cl Taskbar and Start Menu.
cl Start Menu, cl Customize, cl Remove.
cl the icon for the program you wish to remove
then cl Remove.
There is also a “Disable All” button.
This will prevent the program from loading at startup, but will not remove the program from the hard disk.
When you are working in a large file, save frequently to restore full memory access. (Your work remains in memory until you “save” it to disk.)
Did you run an error check? Open My Computer,
Right-cl on C:, Select Properties, Tools – Run an Error Check ( checkmark “check all and fix); then run a Defrag
Are you using Yahoo Toolbar? Run a full Norton Antispy.
From IE, click Tools, Internet Options
delete cookies
delete files (offline files)
clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)
click o.k., and Restart
click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup
click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew)
All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take.
Note: Games and videos are mostly graphics. Graphics create large files. If this doesn’t help, you should consider getting more memory.

Check to see how many antivirus or antispam programs you have on your pc. If you have more than one it will slow it down because both are going to check system files and programs at the same time. Norton and antispyware programs are being used in just about all browsers. Try to also use one browser on pc, delete any that you don't use. Suggest have two harddrives one for surfing only and the other for your storage. Will run faster and if surfing drive gets a virus can always format and reload browsers but not lose important files.

Using registry cleaner can fix your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there are some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically! It even can speed up your computer by 300% or more!

don't mess around with msconfig if you don't know much about computers, because you can mess up the whole computer...
you are having this problem because you have too many programs running (started up when you turned your computer on)
i suggest you, download a program called "CCleaner"
after you download and install "CCleaner" open it up
after opening it up, click on "tools", after that click on "start up"
from there delete all the unnecessary startup programs, restart your computer, and you will see that everything is running faster
heres where you can download "CCleaner"
http://www.ccleaner.com
or the direct link is...
