Wow. so many people missed the point.
Here is what my thoughts are. There is a difference and it is not just in the number of gods.
Monothesim always places the diety at perfection, without fault. And thus superior to all other things. All things were made by this supreme being.
Thus those who directly act on his behalf are superior to those who just worship him ( the assumtion that a pope is more holy than a lay worshiper and thus has the inherent right to interpret the deities works and words).
Polythesim is quite the reverse, the dietys together created everything, one of the deities is usually stronger than the others but is not all powerful. Each deity has faults and virtues.
The assumption is that while the priests may interpret the works and words of the deities they will make their own desires known to the lay people as readily as to the clergy because each deity is striving for itself, thus no assumetion of holier than thou.

1. Polytheism has many deities.
2. Monotheism usually relegates their single god as all-powerful. Polytheism cannot do this.
Note: Becuase of this, the gods can be easily excused forr not answering prayers, as they have oppositions, or a lack of power.
3. Poly gods are generally not perfect, creating a more believable deity.
I'm not saying my gods exist, but monotheism makes no real sense.

Polytheism is the belief in multiple Gods. Such religions include Hinduism, ancient Greek belief, Egyptians, and most ancient religions. Polytheistic belief was the first religious belief bases, this belief of many Gods controlling the various wonders of nature that they could not at that time understand.
As man began to understand more of the world around him, monotheistic belief dawned. The first group of monotheist was the Jews. This fade caught on and now it is the major religious belief in the world.

monotheism is believing in only one god, whereas polytheism is believing in many gods.good examples would be christianity and judaism where people believe in just one god and no other god(or supreme being of whatever). a perfect example of polytheism would be the ancient greeks and romans who worshiped hundreds of gods and goddesses

Polytheism believes there are many gods, while monotheism believes there is only one.
In my opinion, both are believing in imaginary beings.

The most obvious answer is that Polytheist believe in multiple gods, and monotheists believe in only one god.
The million dollar question: Will you go to Heaven? Here's a quick test. Have you ever told a lie, stolen anything, or used God's name in vain? Jesus said, "Whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her has committed adultery already with her in his heart." Have you looked with lust? Will you be guilty on Judgment Day? If you have done those things God sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterer at heart. The Bible warns that if you are guilty you will end up in Hell. That's not God's will. He sent His Son to suffer and die on the cross for you. Jesus took your punishment upon Himself -"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." Then He rose from the dead and defeated death. Please, repent (turn from sin) today and trust in Jesus, and God will grant you everlasting life. Then read your Bible daily and obey it.
