This is the US, not Saudi Arabia. They're allowed to believe any damn fool thing they like. And I think very few Christians support him and his group. It takes a particularly inventive theology to hate the sin and hate the sinner.

EDIT: Link, for those who've never heard of Fred Phelps - He's a nut with an all-family congregation and a particularly intolerant viewpoint.

I'd prefer not to link directly to his site, since the title of the church's website has an anti-gay slur in it.

Man, this question has more holes than Swiss cheese.

First, Phelps doesn't have a "religion" of hatred; he just has a group of haters.

Second, Phelps calls his hate-group a "church" just to make it look legitimate. He isn't a Christian, so why should Christians have to "do something" about his shameful behavior? Why hasn't the Lions Club or the New York Philharmonic done anything about him? Why haven't YOU done anything about him?

Third, exactly what do you expect anyone to do about him? This IS America, you know. Phelps' freedom of speech is guaranteed by the Constitution.

Fourth, Christians don't support Phelps AT ALL. Did you make that part up? Take a creative-writing class.

They don't say too much about Freddy the freak becouse of the same reason they dident say too much about the rapes of little boys by chatholic priests. Religion is off limits to ridicule becouse we all have the right to worship as we see fit and it is "wrong" to say anything negative about someones religion no matter how far out of bad they are ( provided they are one of the big three) Religious people always say that their interpretation of the bible is the correct one, show me one religion in the big three that will tell you that the other one is the correct one. You cant! Ol' Freddy freak is just enjoying the freedom of religion to spread his personal feelings in the name of a god. He likes the fact that you can play with language and the bible is a playground for forming a platform of hate that you cant say anything about. If you make too big of a stink about some guys belief than you leave yourself open for investigation. Too much stink in a church will cause people to leave and then that means money is lost from the collection plate, so they just keep quiet and hope it will pass them bye. Morality has no true definition so it can be moulded like clay by the charismatic leader and when it is delivered in the name of a god it has punch behind it.

What would you like us to do -- take him out behind the barn and shoot him? Last I checked, that was still frowned upon by those of the law enforcement persuasion.

Fred Phelps isn't a Christian. . .he's a big-mouthed egotistical bigot. Legal steps have been taken to prevent him from holding his little hate fests near military funerals, and I'm willing to bet that 99.9% of the Christian community would like to see him shipped off to Siberia in a leaky lifeboat.

And I'm even willing to go to the marine supply store and buy the life raft, myself.

I certainly don't support him, and I don't know any Christians who do. And what are we supposed to do about him, besides write him a letter telling him he's wrong and actually going against what Jesus taught in almost everything he does? He and all his followers will someday stand before the Lord in judgment and he will have to answer for everything he did.

I do not support him or anything he and his followers espouse. As far as doing anything about it, we live in a free society and even people as misguided as they are have the right to prove their foolishness to the rest of us.

I am a Christian and I do not support him. What I 'do' about him is state my belief that God's love is unconditional.
