I use this site:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
to compare what programs are in my msconfig startup tab. Just check what you have running, and see what it is by finding it on that site, and turn it off if you don't want/need it. Usually you will want to leave any Firewall/antivirus programs/components enabled, as well as any drivers, such as NVIDIA/ATI/Intel/AMD, etc.
Hope this helps.

Well usually, your computer is already running its necessary processes at startup, what you could try is just to start your pc in safe mode, which loads only the most basic version of windows onto your system. At this moment, mines running about 34 processes. What may be happening is you may have viruses or spyware(which can chew up your memory or run hidden programs or run malware/spyware that you don't see,in the process bar) Selective startup won't do anything but what you tell it to. All you basically need is explorer and systray running in the background for your computer to start and or to run properly,as that will load windows and only your key drivers. Try running your antivirus or spyware programs(if you have them)to see if it is a viral or spyware issue. If not,you may just be giving your computer too much to do. Try to elaborate. If you can, tell me exactly what is running in your background. Or if you feel comfortable, take a screenshot of your taskbar and send it to me so that I can tell you what to remove from your booting sequence so that your computer can run better.Try removing any unnecessary program(things like IMing applications, game updaters, program updaters, etc). It's worth a try. Essentially, everything except explorer or systray should be all that you need(well don't remove any of your networking/internet things for windows as it will reset your computer and you'll have to do what I just told you all over again)But please try to send me an expanded screenshot of your task manager so I can see what you need and what you don't need.

Some of them are important whereas some of them are not. If you are running windows, do a Task Manager click on the Process Tab and see the process (e.g. MDM.exe) then go to Google and do a search for MDM.exe. Usually the 1st few results will do a report on the process, what is it and few people comments on whether you can disable them and how to disable them.

Read the links I've provided....But just so you know...I have tweaked a few PC's in the past and you don't see that much of a difference in stopping processes ...So don't put to much effort into this...Some areas of focus that will speed a system up are:
Running "msconfig" and stopping unnecessary programs from start-up...Duh...I'm sure you knew that
One of the most resource hungry things are...Your Anti-Virus...If your using Mcafee or Norton or Zone Labs Suite...etc There is one of your problems...Try using Nod32 http://www.eset.com/download/index.php
I saw a real change in the response of my PC after changing from Zone Labs...
Of course..increasing system memory!
If your using Internet Explorer...Theres another problem...Try Firefox as your browser http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/
There are more tips but I have to crash...Hope this helps....Steve
