Hey. Wicked good question.
I go to an environmental college, and most of the time all the students do is complain about what people are NOT doing, instead of talking about what they CAN do.
For starters, we can make simple changes to our own daily behavior. For example, Recycle not just the redemable cans, but all cans, a have a friend that throws away their cat food cans.. it drives me crazy. And paper, plastics... mostly everything you use can be recycled, and if it can't be... maybe you should wonder why.
A lot of people think it takes money to be an environmentalist, but often, if just takes time. For example, paper plates, why do we use them? because we're too lazy to wash the dishes. and leaving lights on? because we're too lazy to turn them off. and YES it does save money to turn your lights off, EVERYTIME unless you are going to be out of the room for 30 seconds or less, so don't jive me on that. one of the easiest things you can do is buy compact flouresant lightbulbs. You'll save an average of 40 dollars in energy costs for life of every bulb, along with 500 pounds of coal. Now, you can not tell me that isn't worth the extra money for the investment.
The single best thing you can do is buy locally grown food. Not just for the environment, but for humanity. Food being grown over seas is often grown in substandard living conditions by people who can not afford to eat (see: Etheopia; the major supplier of the USA's green beans). Its also a good way to protect yourself (See: Califonia's e-coli vegetables.)
I suggest you go through your daily routine and pick apart why you do the things you do. Do you take the highway because its faster? because if you took the backroads it would take longer, but often the distance between a and b is less mileage, and the slower speed will save gasoline.
Goodluck!! I could go on and on, but I think that when you look at your life, and your household appliances, and the type of car you drive, you'll start to think of a lot of other things you can change. Oh, and also say: paper, not plastic. <3

Drive the speed limit, unplug that T.V. that wastes power for the "instant on" feature. Turn off lights not needed, also reduce the wattage just a little with energy saving bulbs. Add a brick to the toilet tank to reduce water wasted. Wash more clothes less. Wear an extra article of clothing in the winter, use less heat, and use ceiling and floor fans in the summer, set air conditioner temp higher. Turn down the thermostat on the water heater a few degrees. Water yard early morning or late evening. Just a few ideas.

look for energy efficient light bulbs, they kind of twist. they are more expensive but eventually you will save money because they do not use as much electicity and they are helping the enviroment. other than that just watch what you do. (i.e. when brushing teeth or whatever don't leave water running, don't wash clothes so often, wait until you really need to, same with dishes, or just let them soak and then wash them). it seems like you aren't really makeing a difference, but you are, every person counts.

Get rid of Al Gore and all of the liberal Democrats in Congress. Also, since capitalism and private property rights produces the cleanest environment (see eastern Europe, Russia, China), We need to have mandatory Capitalism and property rights for all the countries of the world. This would include the Socialist countries of Western Europe as well.

Psychiatric counseling might help, but I don't hold out too much hope for a cure.

Watch the amount of water you use, buy flourescent bulbs, use other means of transportation besides automobiles (i.e. taking the city bus, carpooling, riding your bike, etc., etc.)...
