Is stainless steel 304 magnetic? What are its properties?

Generally 304 stainless shows very weak, if any, attraction to a magnet. If it is cold worked, this can change the properties to give much stronger attraction. Read the article linked below for a summary.

The 300 series of stainless steel is magnetic, includes the 304, it is the lowest Chromium content stainless steel around and the cheapest by comparison. It is not heat treatable. and it has the poor corrosion properties due to the amount of Chromium present

If you want a non magnetic stainless you would use the 400 series. which is also heat treatable.

Try the Crucible Steel on the Net, they used to publish the specs on Stainless, they manufacture it.

No. Non-magnetic, highly polishable and very corrosive resistant.
