If a 105mm round (m60a3 patton tank) was fired at an m1 abrams, would it penetrate? More specifically heat and solid penetrators, but hesh would be nice too.

I'd also like to know how the RPG-7's stats are, if anyone could answer that.

In Tom Clancy's Armored Cav(one of his non-fiction ones) he recounts the story of an M1A1 of the 24ID(M),during the first Gulf War, that got stuck in the mud during the ground war, and wound up taking hits from not one but 3 125mm armored piercing rounds from 3 different T-72's the first 2 bounced off and the third only gouged the frontal armor and the M1 took out the 3 T-72's. Then when the M88's couldn't get the tank out of the mud it was decided to destroy in place by shooting it with 120mm rds from other M1's this failed to do the job, and when one fired on it from another angle all it did was blow up the ammo and knock the sights out of whack, this was determined after more 88's showed up and pulled it back to the repair yard. So basically this one M1A1 took 3 125mm rds and a crap load of 120mm rds and only one penetrated and that was most likely through the roof.

Most 105's don't have the penetration power to disable, or knock out an Abrams main battle tank. Its due to Chobham armor, a laminated steel and carbon plating which causes most HEAT rounds to disintegrate, or sabot's to deform thus making em ineffective.
There are 120 & 125 MM rounds that will do the trick though. Also insurgents have figured out that a buried 500 pounder detonated underneath the tank when it passes over does the trick pretty well.

Lexus Hon, weve been there 4 + years, they know damn well what works and what doesn't. They are Arabs, but you can't always make that synonymous with stupidity. They have a minimum of intelligence.

Further more, all the information I typed pretty much came in condensed form from the military channel, I certainly could have gone into alot more detail, just too lazy to type it all. I was in Bahgdad all of 2004, satelit dishes where springing up like forrests, do ya think they have the military channel? My guess would be probably.

And lexus, please don't say what calibre will work and which one won't. Just go back to doing in the air force whatever it is you do, flipping eggs, passing out blankets, whatever! Because your letting your *** hang out. I know exactly what will penetrate an abrams, I used to study them after they where hit. (Gulf War 1991) So please stick to whatever it is you do well, and thats not armor.

You can stop lieing anytime, a 120MM smooth bore round most certainly can penetrate armor, so stop B.S.ing people, both heat and sabot, oh wait, your air farce, sorry, you don't have any of those. Guess you forgot to read the I was in Iraq in 2004, I'm not that far removed Honey. Stick to air force rounds but obviously youve never seen what a 120 will do to armor, 0or its occupants. "I HAVE"!

Your quite welcome :)

Thank you Okie Boy, for telling insurgents in Afghanistan what THEY still have to learn.

This is horrible, horrible OPSEC to talk about sh*t like this. How do you think insurgents find out what areas of the vehicles are most vunerable? And how much explosives they have to use?

And your assessment is incorrect anyway. There is no way a projectile as small as a 120mm will penetrate armor... Even the larger projectiles (152, 155, etc) cannot. Only weapons/IEDs that are considered AT (anti-tank) are capable of that.

So for any terrorists out there, now you learned what doesn't work. Good luck figuring out what does.

EDIT: Very mature of you, Okie, I like having you chase me around the forums... cute. And as for what I do, I am here filling Army billets in a job that specializes in exactly what I am talking about, so don't tell ME that I don't know what I'm talking about. 120mm projectiles CANNOT penetrate armor, that is ridiculous. Did you ever stop to consider that maybe, just maybe, things may have changed in the past 16 years?

Whatever, I am done arguing with you. Thank you for the insults, it's been a pleasure.

Depends where the shot hits. Even if it don't penetrate you can immobilize the tank or at least disable the turret. Then all that needs to be done is reload and fire a 2nd easy shot for the kill and enjoy the barbecue.
