You are clearly describing Santa Monica. Try the neighborhood closest to the ocean north of Wilshire. You can walk to a lot of places - you are close to the airport and the studios in West LA, and you are super cool because you live in Santa Monica (plus its under rent control)!

Don't know where you are living now, but here in SoCal there seems to be a more Starbucks than McDonald's. They are everywhere. And grocery stores don't seem to be a problem, either. I'm wondering why you want to be near the studios? Looking for an acting position, perhaps? In any case, anywhere near the studios is guaranteed to have a Starbucks nearby. That being the case, you will probably want to find a place in Burbank, Toluca Lake, Glendale, or Eagle Rock. Burbank and Glendale are their own cities. All four of those areas are within 10 miles of the airport at Burbank, which is a lot easier to get in and out of than LAX, and it's closer to the major studios located in Burbank, Studio City, and Glendale. Start looking in those areas, and you should be OK.

Brentwood is a nice area, but not close to the studios (sort of close to Sony, in Culver City, I guess). Traffic's a real bear on the west side, though. And parking is a nightmare.

Start with craigslist.com and go from there. Don't sign anything until you actually see the neighborhood and visit the apartment. Agencies and landlords can exaggerate and outright lie about the desireability of a location. Be careful, this is LA, the smoke and mirrors capital of the universe, where nearly everything is a special effect.

At the Beach, Manhanttan, Hermosa, Redondo. 20 minutes from the LA airport, and there is a movie studio in El Segundo.

Westchester, Culver city for airport. However i like the west valley like Calabasas and Agoura Hills. Be careful of Inglewood and South Central LA.

I don't know---- check craigslist or westsiderentals for an Apartment in Westwood. It is kind of between the airport and the studios (although the studios are starting to pop up all over the place, including Culver City)........Westwood would be good for you....
Oh you could check the Daily Bruin also....(The UCLA newspaper).

San Dimas, Glendora, La Verne. All still have small town atmosphere amazingly.
