Why do people discourage YOUR dreams?

All I wanted to do was to be a pro skateboarder. Thats all. Its what I want to do. I love everything about it. The freedom, the challenge, the people. Just the love of the sport alone gives me a reason to get out there. So when I tell people like my mom or family, they want to put me down and tell me that I will never make it out there and that its just for some white boy to take my place. Theyve never been able to see things like "Stevie Williams Untitled" or read an inteview about Bucky Lasek. Im in this for myself now, because I have no one to back me up. They dont think that this is realistic, which is understandble, but dont put me down after it. How can I make them realize that this is what I really want to do, and if I cant do that, how can I just shake them off?

to be honest, I like to be realistic.
for example, I know that I absolutely am horrible at running. But I really like running and I picture myself always getting 1st or 2nd places during marathons.
But let's face it... I have bad knees (I had to do surgery on it twice) and I'm not exactly fit either....
So when people tell me: "you're never going to win great marathons" I still am sad, but I know it's the truth.
Now in your case, I don't know if you're good at skating or not, but sometimes people just put others down because
1) they are either jealous of you
2) they can see other fields of work where you are stronger
3) they are mean.
4) they want you to do something for their own selfish reasons.

most people think realistically and dont want you to get your hopes crushed and when it comes to parents responding that way they dont consider such professions to be respectable and they would much rather their children grow up to be doctors and such
