My buddy and I were having this debate. The farmers and moonshiners like my grandpa would kick @ss, literally if they had to. Alot of them were war vets too. What do you guys think?

You and your friends have WAY to much time on your hands. You listed a good bunch but i would have to say the redneck farmers because we kick butt. Plus most of us rednecks have Indian in us and most of us are bikers. Honestly this question is BS but you have to settle it so my answer is rednecks.

*ROFL* =)) I can't *believe* I am answering this one, but....
I think it goes without saying that if you are looking for folks who are "tough" courtesy of living "hard lives", you can't just confine the list to the free and law-abiding, ok? If you really want to be fair about it, and include "black gangstas" then you have to include the people who are also confined, like your Felons in Prison, or your Psychos in the Psychiatric Wards....
Of course, the only problem with doing that is....some folks in Prison *do* get "punked out", and some folks in the Psych Ward are too *drugged out* to actually be worth anything in a fight.
Which really...actually *is* the answer to your question. It isn't the subculture. It isn't about your "hood". It's about *where* you are in the food chain, so to speak. People who are *dominant* or at the top of their game are *going* to be tougher than average no matter *where* they come from. This is just a combination of common sense and human nature for you....when you are a part of a subculture that is on the margins of society (yes, this even happens in the trailer parks and in public housing), people struggle to establish *their own* social order and to be a success, or "on top" at least in those terms, in their own social order. It happens.
Having said that....I've heard some things, that the whole "gangsta" business varies *hugely* depending on the region the thug comes from. But felons on the inside who are *not* punked out generally tend to be tougher than the folks on the outside (as they're allowed to lift and beef, more or less, until someone does get hurt). And I would also *not* underestimate *any* veteran of a pre-Vietnam-era war, some of these people *were* trained well in close-quarters-combat skills, some of which are only now being *rediscovered*.
So yeah, I hope this points you in something *closer* to a right direction, though your mileage will vary a *lot* depending on the region of your nation and the world you are talking about.

how about the russian business owners?
I'd go with them. the farmers and moonshiners would fall to a jedi mind trick performed by one of the kfc rats, indian gangs could be taken out by throwing cow flesh at them, black "gangstas" are just disorganized (but large number) gangs and they aren't even the largest street gang in the country (or the world)- the largest is spanish- and it is international thanks to U.S. deportation policies which didn't work. bikers are too much of a sore thumb, and are "low level" violence types.
the russians could and many are ex-kgb. thier mentality is that they don't fear jail because jail in the U.S. is a joke. better to steal a couple million dollars do time then you will be rich when you get out. They are the most entrepenurial and ambitious of the bunch. They are the new "immigrant wave" and those are always tougher.
redneck farmers? I think they will be too busy thumping thier bible and having sex with thier donkey while thier daughter gets passed around the highschool like a bong.

well I would have to put my moneys on the redneck farmers. They never have any luxury of comfort so they're surely to be tough as hell. Oh also they're also more likely have hair all over body that look like a sweater and men with bunches of hair on body= tough as nail!

They're all idiots.
If they weren't, they wouldn't have chosen the toughest possible path in a society that is relatively easy to make your way in.
Tough? I don't know that any of them are. Drinking and drugs don't exactly make your body stronger. The only thing they have to make them feared is their willingness and readiness to use extreme violence. As I said, idiots.
