No, you will never be able to teach them to stop killing birds. You are right, hunting is their natural instinct.

1. put bells around their neck (more than one, because one will often not work). this will scare the birds off before the cats get to pounce on them.

2. cats are nocturnal hunters. Keep them inside during the night, or make some type of cattery (outside kennel) to keep them in during night hours.

I don't think you can train a cat not to hunt. You could try getting more toys, play birds and mice etc.. I'm sure their not killing because they're hungry, its just instinct. Maybe if you provide alternatives they won't be so apt to chase the other critters. Find the loudest bell you can, one that will make noise every time they move.

I don't think so. That is just natural. In the wild, that is how they eat. It is an instinct that is built in at birth. I would be careful with bells on an outside cat. If they have to get away from a predator, like a big dog, they cannot hide. The predator will hear them.

Unfortunatly cat and natural predators and they will continue no matter what you do. The only way to stop them would be to confine them to the house or make a pen outside so they can still go outside... or...eventually the birds will get smart and stop coming around.

I don't think you can, I haven't been able to stop my cat, he will leave his food dish to chase a bird. I have 4 bird feeders in my back yard and he thinks that is his buffet.

No, unfortuntely, I dont think you can do anything, besides bells, which you have already tried. Its natural instinct. Unless you build a cage for them, so they are still outside but cannot get to the birds.

No way other than keeping them inside. Can you say preditor? Very good! Now let's put Mr. Hamster in the microwave. Sheesh. You don't know puddy tats very well.

That's sort of like asking us to stop eating or drinking! It's natural!

Every time one of your cats kills a bird, hit it with a dog. This is the Pavlovian approach.

If you can't keep your pets inside your home or confined then you should not have pets. I doubt your neighbors appreciate your cats as much as you do.
