The right lane is the slower lane because big rigs have a speed limit of 55 mph. the speed limit for cars is 65. My dad drives these big trucks and they carry 80,000 pounds at times. they really can't go that fast. These trucks use the first and second lane only. thats why its the slower lanes. u can expect big rigs on them

There used to be a lot of 2 lane high ways. So if you wanted to pass someone you had to go into the other lane on the left to pass.
Now we have a lot of freeways and if you want to slow down and get off, you have to be in the right lane, most of the time.

that's my theory anyway.

Because when traffic merges off a ramp, cars in the right lane need to be going slower. So the car that is getting off the ramp can merge to the highway safely without getting hit by faster moving cars.

on highways its the lane closest to the exit, and when youre looking for your exit you tend to go slower, making sure you dont miss it, or crash into the car trying to switch into the lane to exit
