When you hear the news of a fire, you hear a reporter saying: "2 people die, blah blah, 4-alarm fire" what do they mean by 4 alarm or other number fire alarm?

those numbers are for how bad the fire is and how many batalllions were called to it like a triple 5 alarm is real bad

I always thought 4-alarm meant 4 different companies responded. At least that is what it seems in my area of volunteer companies. I never really thought about it!!

that's a good question, i believe it is related to the severity of the fire, the higher the alarm number the more severe the fire is, good question
