My son turns 1 tommorrow I have been slowly introducing him to cows milk for a while now with cereal and yoghurt. I've been told they can have cows milk instead of formula from 12 months what is usually the transition as he is on 4 bottles a day now and hes on anti reflux formula . I 've noticed there is a lot of toddler formulas on the market are these just money spinners and not really necessary? Or do Ikeep going with my current formula. thanks in advance

Recommendations

Skim or 2% milk:

Under one year of age, skim and 2% (low-fat) milk have no place in the diet. They supply too much protein, potassium, and sodium and not enough calories for the growing infant. Children also need the fat for proper growth and development including brain development.

Low fat milks are not the answer for an overweight baby. The desirable diet is the same as that of a normal weight infant; the amount is the only difference. Conferring with a registered dietitian or physician is recommended. The recommendation will probably be a reduction in the amount of intake, not the type of intake. A slight reduction of calories by reducing the amount will allow the infant to "grow into his weight" without a rapid change in body fat. Rapid weight loss can be dangerous, particularly in a small child. An extreme reduction of fat stores might not leave enough energy stores for the infant to combat a serious illness. Many physicians question the serious, unknown consequences of a rapid loss of fat.

Suggested Intake - Infants:

Breast Milk:
every 1-3 hrs for infants 0-3 months
every 2-4 hrs for infants 4-5 months
every 3-4 hrs for infants 6-8 months
every 4-5 hrs for infants 9-12 months
Iron fortified Formula (per day):
18-40 oz. for infants 0-3 months
24-45 oz. for infants 4-5 months
24-37 oz. for infants 6-8 months
24-31 oz. for infants 9-12 months

Dairy:

none for infants 0-3 months
none for infants 4-5 months
none for infants 6-8 months
small servings for infants 9-12 months

Suggested intake - children 2 to 5 years of age:

cow's milk
6 servings/day
one servings equals:
1/2 cup milk, yogurt, pudding
3/4 oz. cheese
1 cup cottage cheese

all 3 of my children had to be on soy formula then as soon as they turned 8 months i began adding cows milk into their formula at an once at a time for their systems to get used to it. For one week fil bottle up with formula what they been drinking.. minus a a 1/4 cup add whole cow milk. week week three add 2/3 cup milk week 5 now your at 1/2 formula and 1/2 milk. by 1 yr of age baby should be on whole milk. intraducing it to them gradually will prevent upset tummys and vomiting. ;o) This is what my pediatrician told me and it works.

My son will be 1 next week, and I started him on whole milk-cows milk almost a month ago. The Doctor said it would be fine, and that he should have 16 ounces a day. He has max. 2 bottles a day though. Sounds like your son still takes alot of bottles for his age. Maybe give him the cows milk in a sippy cup during the day, and at night if he wakes up give him a bottle.

I agree with everyone else. Those toddler formulas are a waste of money! If he can handle dairy then switch to whole milk (they need the fat for the brain).

My son had some allergy & reflux issues so we switched to soy milk. That worked fine too. If you try soy milk just make sure that it is vitamin "enriched". They end up getting the equivilant of cows milk this way.

Good Luck!

My baby who is now 2 yrs old had reflux and was on the same kind of formulas. He didnt quit the reflux until we gave him cows milk. Also, depending on if he has teeth, introduce some starchy foods. Those gerber melt away banana flavored snacks for toddlers are great! Soon, the reflux should be almost gone. My son still has it but maybe is bothered by it once a month now if that.

I think it is for kids that don't take cows milk well. If your son is doing good with cows milk just let him have it! It has so many things a child needs in it!

money spinners....i wonder if anyone has wondered why many of the kids growing up today have more allergies to more foods then ever before??? Its because we are introducing all this crap that is really not necessary. SOME is....but its ridiculous to me really. We are so germaphobic these days and so OVERLY-cautious of what we put into our bodies...cows milk has been used since forever...has anyone NOT benefitted from natures way? I think my generation is pretty healthy for the most part....but the kids today??? Not so much when you really think about it. I say do what our four fathers/mothers did... everything has gone down the toilets once we fell off that path.

ARE YOU PEOPLE CRAZY!!!!!!!! you really need to check out this stuff before you do harm to your kids. there are nerves in your body (yes nerves) that your child is growing until they start consuming cows milk .formula and brest milk help to grow them and the fatty tissue around them. this protects your child latter in life when he is say riding a bike or playing football. so go ahead and take him off of the formula if you want to to save money but really it's a small thing to do with huge benefits. that is why they tell you to breast feed till 2 and it even says on baby formula that it promotes eye and brain development. we are they only animals that drink another animals milk. your really doing the best right now giving formula for another year. look it up

My son just turned 1 last week and we are totally avoiding those toddler formulas. It doesn't make sense to get him on "big people" food, and then keep him on formula. Our doctor recommended 12-16 oz of milk per day, and from sippy cups, not the bottle.

And congrats to you son. Aren't they great???
