Do I wait till he shows signs of decline or do I put him down now prior to potenially suffering?

BTW-The vet says they can't stop it.

Thanks for the concern...the vet talked about all the options. Removal of leg, cancer treatments, etc. In the end I asked him point blank if it would save him. He told me that the proximity to the heart and vital organs means that it is probably already in the organs. Again, what quality of life would prolonging it bring?

I'm a big beleiver in that the dog will let you know when it is time. There is a look they give you that only it's owner can see and the you know it's time.
Enjoy him while you can. And savor every minute of every day!

I agree with both Jebgee and Super K. I would suggest a second opinion with a veterinary oncologist. It doesn't mean you have to do any drastic treatment if you don't want to. It may just give you peace of mind in knowing that the diagnosis is correct. I would definitely NOT put him down now. Let him enjoy himself as long as he has a good quality of life, and he is comfortable and happy. You may also check out this Yahoo group for more support and info.

Good luck and God bless.

Bone cancer will become painful...extremely so..and quickly. More than likely amputation is the immediate treatment. If it has spread to the lungs then it is already too late to do that and you only have a matter of weeks. What ever you decide do it quickly so that you pet does not suffer either way.

I would recommend getting a second opinion. The leg may be able to be amputated. Dogs can live quite happily with three legs. Otherwise, as a prior answerer said, your dog will let you know. If he is in pain and not enjoying life, it is time. Until then, enjoy every moment and make him as comfortable as possible. Good luck.

Has he ever thought of using a bone marrow transplant or stem-cell therapy from a healthy doner?

They had a case up here in Washington state where the dog in question had a similiar problem with lukemia. A bone-marrow transplant from a healthy doner fixed him up just nice.

If it is cancer, don't let him suffer. put him down. but my dog had a lump on his leg once, but it was a callus because of his elbows hitting the hard wood floor. he is fine now. I am so sorry, but the best decision is to put him down.
