this girls father is in debt and is about to lose the farm. the banker tells him that he will call off the debt if his daughter marries him. she told him this idea she had. she said they will go to the river that has white rocks and black rocks. she will put one of each color in a bag and randomly choose one. if she chose the white rock, she will marry him and that will pay off the debt. if she chose the black rock she will not have to marry him and the debt will be called off. so they went to the river. the banker put two rocks in a bag but they were both white. the daughter saw him but didnt want to say anything because that might upset him and they might lose the farm and that is not an option. so how could she get out of this situation with out revealing that he cheated and without marrying him

She could pull a rock out of the bag (which of course would be white) but close her hand around it so that no one could see what color it was. Then, she could pull the other rock out and show it to the banker, and say, 'Since this rock is white, then the one I have in my hand must be black.' And then she gets off scott-free.

As soon as she takes out a rock, before anyone can see it, she "accidentally" drops it back into the river. The only way the people would be able to tell what colour it was would be to look at the remaining rock in the bag, which would obviously have been white, so that the one she chose must have been the black one.

Well, she could tell the banker to choose a rock first and she will take the one that is left in the bag. He would pull out a white rock and she could assume the one left in the bag is black (even though she knows better). The trick would be getting him to agree to this since he knows he cheated.

She was supposed to put the rocks in the sack not the banker. No matter which rock she chose the debt will be called off. She is the winner all the way.

This is hard. I think she should just have a black rock in her hand and when asked to draw just pull it out. Then when the banker will be surprised and say it is impossible because he put 2 white rocks in the bag.

She should take one rock, put it in her pocket, then turn the bag upside down, dropping the other white rock onto the ground. Then she can say "Oh, there's the white rock, so I've got the black one."
