NO. People medicine can kill a dog. Never give any kind of medication to a dog without asking a vet first.
BTW...it is true, as many people are saying here, that some people medicine IS safe to give to dogs. (Benadryl is a good example. I give it to my dog frequently for allergies.) My point is just that, if you don't know for sure, don't just assume that if people can take it, a dog can. Check with a vet first. Better safe than sorry where your "best friend" is concerned!

Yes, Pepto Bismo helps with loose stools, but I think a vet would recommend Kaopectate instead.
I used to give my dogs Immodium in pill form and it worked like a charm and quickly too!
But ask your vet for the recommended dosage for your type dog.
He should also be checked for parasites/bacteria as well, because that is a major cause of diarhhea.

You've done the right thing by asking first.
Unfortunately, you've gotten mixed messages in all these answers. Keep in mind that the best authority for what you can and cannot give your dog is your veterinarian. If you cannot reach your vet, please research whatever it is you want to give your dog, online, and make sure you see a variety of several different legitimate sources that all say the same thing.
SOME people drugs are OK to give to dogs in smaller dosages.
SOME people drugs will kill your dog.
Pepto Bismal is a drug that is OK to adminster to your dog. In small amounts! Your vet can tell you the proper dosing for your particular dog.
However, it's pretty hard to make a sick dog ingest a liquid. Recently when my dog had a bad tummy ache and bad gas and a bit of diarrhea, I considered Pepto but instead opted for a tiny chunk of a regular antacid tablet (just regular chalky Tums) and I hid it in a small piece of food, which was a lot easier to administer than Pepto would've been.

You can give it to a dog, but why when there are less expensive things to give a dog for upset stomach/diarrhea, like pumpkin pie filling? It comes in a can, sells for less than a dollar a can and dogs like to eat it. It's a natural binder.
Got that tip from my Vet. Dogs seem to hate the flavor of Pepto Bismol. Also, when I tried it, long long ago, it didn't work very good. People used to give their dogs Kaopectate. It worked, but very slowly. Pumpkin Pie filling is the best most effective thing I have found unless the cause of your dogs problem is not being addressed as in the dog has parasites or something that cause the problem.

Sorry I have to disagree with the person who said that you cannot give a dog medication that people take. Pretty much anything you give a human a dog can have. i have given my dog pepto bismol plenty of times and my aunt gives her dog aspirin cause it has bad hips. You can call your vet to consult him first but I am positive about this.

Hi Nette, Yes i have. I had a pup who had parvo and the vet told me what to do. I gave my pup one teaspoon of Peto Bismo every hour on the hour plus same water that i put down her throat every hour on the hour. I did this for 2 straight days and it saved the pups life. I cut back and started her on one teaspoon every 2 hours and she came around and is a healthy pup and problemly will never get Parvo again. A Friend.

I was told by the vet to do this. I took our puppy to the vet twice for upset stomach. They insisted that nothing was wrong with him and they suggested Pepto. Briar weighed about 7 pounds at the time and they said to give him 1 teaspoon. It worked for out puppy, but you should ask your vet before trying it. You would want to make sure that you gave the right dosage.

Pepto is safe for dogs (not cats), you should call your vet for the dosage. But ... you should really visit the vet first to find the cause of the problem.
