Some brands of catnip are 'old' and don't really smell very good anymore. trying another packet. You can't really be sure how long it's been there on the shelf but larger stores normally go through their stock faster than smaller ones so it might be a safer bet.
Secondly, not all cats are into catnip. But since your cat used to go crazy for the previous batch, he's probably one of those who are.. So it could be something wrong with the batch you got. They shouldn't smell like peppermint.. that's for sure..

How old is your cat? In my experience, age can be a factor. Catnip acts like a stimulant, we like it cause it seems to make the cat go nuts without hurting the cat. However, kittens don't really need a stimulant, they haven't reached the point where their metabolism has slowed enough to need one to be frisky. I have found that my cats didn't really show an interest in catnip till they were over 6 months or so, some not until after a year of age. Your kitty may simply be to young to appreciate it. It could be the other reasons too, but nobody mentioned this one.

Catnip is a member of the mint family, so that is why it smells like mint. And about 50 percent of the cat population have no reaction to catnip at all. And kittens do not start to react to it until after they are 2 months old. Try rubbing the dried leaves between your fingers before you give it to him, to release the oils. Some brands are more aromatic than others, too, so try that, too. I laughed when you mentioned that it smells like tea, because you can brew it up and drink it like herbal tea, but IMHO, it tastes kinda grue!
Here's a website that has some very powerful catnip pellets, if your cat doesn't respond to this, than catnip may not be his "drug of choice," and the pellets are not messy.

Catnip was probably way too old and lost most of it's attraction. My sister brought some supposedly catnip from Amsterdam (and, yes, she did say it was catnip) but the cats were completely not interested in it and to me it didn't smell like anything. When I find a nice, fresh smelling bunch of dried catnip, I keep it in a sealed Baggie in the frig so it stays fresh fairly long and the cat cannot get in the frig no matter how much they try.

Quality is one part of the issue, the other is potentcy(?). With the current jar I bought, my one cat ignores the stuff and the other will flop down and roll over the toys that are filled with it. I have noticed that some of the stuff is finely chopped (this is what drives cat #2 nuts) where as cat #1 reacted to the more coarse style. If you can remember what the first pack looked like (coarse, fine, etc) try and compare it to what this type looks like, that could affect it's quality and potentcy.

particular, that's nice for them to consume it. Cats consume catnip each and all of the time.I easily have a similar kind of catnip. they're going to make a multitude with it, nevertheless. I in simple terms hand them a bud and enable them to roll with it on the floor. I easily have wood flooring, so that's ordinary to sparkling up afterwards. have exciting!

Maybe he's on the wagon and simply saying 'no' to catnip. My cat had the same reaction, but when I bought a toy filled with catnip, he tore into it like no body's business. I guess you just never know.

Some catnip is different that others....for some reason..
My cat does the same thing....some brands just don't work, and others he can't get enough of.
It all looks the same to me, but I guess to cats, it's different.

It is normal. My cats will do the same thing. Some brands they will try to open the locked drawer I keep it in to get it. Other brands, I could spread it on the floor and they will stick their noses up at it, (like what do you want me to do with that)? Don't buy this brand anymore. Maybe it is blended differently.

Different cats prefer different types of catnip, kind of like how certain people like different brands of cigarettes, chocolate, anything really.
