It's EGCG. There are a few studies that show about 300 mg of it per day increase metabolism. Unfortunately, you would have to drink about 10 cups a day in order to meet that requirement.

Green tea helps you lose weight because it contains catechins, caffeine and theanine. These compounds interact with each other when consumed and promotes weight loss, much more than individually alone.

Any high quality green tea will have an optimum level of these chemicals. In fact, loose-leaf green harvested using very young tea shoots have the most of these beneficial chemicals.

Increase metabolism (First link)

A study conducted Dr Dulloo in the University of Geneva found that drinking a green tea extract beverage three times a day increases energy expenditure by 4%.

Is 4% too small to make any difference?

If you burn 2,000 calorie a day, this translates to 80 calories, roughly the same amount of calories in a small banana.

But increasing metabolism is not the only way green tea helps lose weight. It also promotes fat burning and reduces absorption and storage of fat. The sum total of these actions has not yet been quantified, but is likely to be significant.

Combine with Exercise (Second link)

The best way to lose weight is to combine green tea with exercise.

Two Japanese studies found that drinking green tea improves endurance performance by up to 24%. Combining green tea and exercise reduces weight gain by 90%!

So green tea is not magic formula, but as a healthy supplement, and in combination with exercise, it is splendid!

Green tea alone will not make you lose weight.

If you are a heavy soda drinker, switching to 0 calorie green tea or other sugarless teas can help you cut calories.

Also, teas in general have antioxidants so they have nutrients essential for the body unlike sodas which is empty calories.

Green tea also has caffeine which can help lose weight.

Green tea tends to stablize your blood sugar levels for most people so you don't go through periods of high and lows throughout the day.

Green tea is full of antioxidants, and it plays a role in boosting metabolism for a short period of time. This is the same principal as with spicy foods, they elevate metabolism for a temporary amount of time which leads to more calories being burned.

Green tea alone will not work to make a person lose weight. Because it is rich in antioxidants it is great to take before or after you exercise. To sum it up, it is a good asset to your weight loss and health program.

It doesn't. It's a marketing scheme. The only thing that works is more exercise, less calories, chosing healthy foods over junk food most of the time, plenty of sleep, and lots of water.
