He got out last night, and was brought back this morning by a nice lady who found him. Now when we hold him we can sort of feel a strain in his muscles when he breathes, he has never passed a hairball, and peopel suggested it could be that, but i'm worried because he was out all night, i am wondering if he swallowed something. Please help?

IT'S NOT A HAIRBALL! Your cat should be taken to the Vet. immediately. It's possible that your cat was hit by a car or suffered some other trauma. The breathing problem could be from pain or another medical issue. Either way, he needs to see a veterinarian right now!

You didn't say whether she is eating normally, if she is acting unusual, or if she has a tender area.

It is possible she got injured by something, or got kicked in her chest or ribcage (possibly by mean kids). I would watch when she goes to the bathroom to see if there is any blood in her urine or stool. If there is, she may have an internal injury. See how she is tomorrow. If she is not better, or her situation worsens tonight, I would get her to a vet.
If she swallowed something, she probably would be coughing and gagging.

You really need to contact a vet. If he licked antifreeze or some other chemical, morning may be too late. Check for injuries. Keep a close eye on him. If anything get worse, get him to a vet immediately.

He could have something stuck in his throat. Or he could have developed asthma, especially if he lives with smokers. Is he a Persian or another type of cat with a small nasal canal? They often have trouble breathing.

Don't waste time trying to figure it out. Kitty needs to go to the vet. Could be a lot of things so best not to guess.

well, i'm no vet but maybe he's just freakin, stressed out from his experience in the "wild blue yonder" just keep an eye on him, call a vet if he keeps having this problem. my cat got out once and acted strangely for a few days. hoefully, that's all it is

Call the emergency vet right away. He could have eaten something harmful or even gotten into a fight with something.
