I had my son 6 months ago, and I named him Alexis Ramon Ruiz, (Alexis for my boyfriends father, and Ramon for my dad) but now i regret it because everyone says that name is for a girl. Does anyone think that is a girls name?

I had a male co-worker named Alexis. Actually, Alexis is not that uncommon for a male. It is more common for a female of course. Check out these stats:

There are 61,804 people in the U.S. with the first name Alexis.
Statistically the 689th most popular first name.
73.17 percent of people with the first name Alexis are female. (http://howmanyofme.com/search/)

So that means 28.83% of Alexis's are male.
That's approximately 17,819 other males in the US share the name Alexis. It's probably a higher number in Puerto Rico.
If it's a family name, I see nothing wrong with it. A lot of Americans are just used to American names, and don't realize that what's feminine to us, me be masculine in other cultures.

Alexis IS a boy's name, but unfortunately Joan Collins' character in Dynasty was called Alexis, and this set it in people's minds as female. I had a (male) friend at school in the 80s who was called Alexis, and he really did suffer for it, even though we all called him Alex. I think it's a good, strong name you have chosen and if people's ignorance is going to be an issue, by all means call him Alex, which is a nice name too.

On first hearing it, yes, but after thinking about it, it sounds just fine. I think it sounds like an affluent person's name...like someone that is part of a rich or royal family of some sort. You gave birth to him and naming him whatever you want is your right...who cares what others think. Some people just have to say something to be running their mouth...some people just misunderstand the name too. My 15 day old son is named Jonah and I've had people say something about it being a name for either a boy or a girl. Not exactly the same thing that's happening to you, but similar. Besides, I can't think I've ever heard of a girl named Jonah.

Either way...I think both of our boys have GREAT names!

I think Alexis is a girl's name. You're son is the first I've heard of a male having this name. I also know a girl named Alexis. You could call him Alex or Ray if you'd like.

Good Luck =]

Hey,
Actually, the first thing i thought of when you said your son's name was Alexis, was that there is an outstanding hockey player in the NHL (i dont know if you follow hockey at all) named Alexis Kovalev. certainly no one mistakes him for a girl! and i am sure that no one mistakes your boyfriend's father for a girl either! you named him Alexis for a reason, and a very good reason i believe...i think the name is beautiful...(just think: there are boys out there named Ashley! and at least if it truely bothers you, you can call your son Alex). best of luck and i hope this helps hun!

In the United States, it's a common girl's name. However, you can always shorten it by calling him Alex and then he will only be Alexis one day when he has to sign a formal check. He can also go by Ramon -- that's a nice name!

Well, you can still change his name legally to Alex or Alejandro, or somthing else..
I am due to have a girl in 2 weeks from now and we plan on naming her Alexis.
I've always thought Alexis was a girls name.

Sorry if I'm being mean but the one Alexis I know is a girl but if you like the name than stay with it. Like Arron is a boys and girls name so why can't Alexis be one to! IF you like the name keep it because I like is as a girls and boys name!
