The right to return a car in a few days for a refund exists only if the dealer grants this privilege. Look over your paperwork and see if there was any possible refund policy clause. My guess is that you're going to have to sell it on your own. Good luck and I hope your family member gets well soon.

Most states have a 72 hr contract cancellation law for things like a car purchase. Like others suggested - don't drive the car or anything and contact the dealership first thing in the morning. The dealerships around here have a 3 day/150 mile program. If you return the car within 3 days and less than 150 miles then they cancel the contract, financing, and it is like the transaction never occurred. You have to pay $150 which is like a rental/mileage fee.

Dealers in my area usually when returning the vehicle, will take off about 10%-15% of the total value when returning the vehicle. This is because as soon as you drive the vehicle off the lot, it demishes about 5% of its value. They chage the 10%-15% because they can not sell the vehicle as new anymore as someone has owned it. The dealer is taking a major hit by having a vehicle returned and to make up for it, they take it out of the vehicle total value. Go to the dealer, and talk to representive, even the loans, or dealer manager, and find out all your options. Don't get a Lawyer involved, this jsut pisses off everyone, sueing or charging the company is never the answer. Each dealer will have their own set of rules for returns, go and talk it over and find out your best options. Be expected to lose money on this deal however. I have cliants who have been dinged this way, and it has pissed them off, but if you stop and think about it on the dealer end of it, its in their rights to do so. Talk it over, what your problem is, what they can do to help, and what options you have.

It depends where you live what the local laws are but I would go to the dealer and explain the situation. Be honest and straight with the sales manager and a usual fee for miles is about 10 to 15 cents per mile. The issue you don't say is the car loan fees to discharge the car loan... if you have one for it. If not, great!

Good Luck, tell the story, appeal to their humanity and empathy for you situation.

Ugh....
Since you are dealing with a group of reptillian scumbags I doubt you will get anywhere by asking them for mercy but it's always worth a shot. I would suggest you go straight to the top -- ask to see the owner of the dealership and spell it out and throw yourself at his/her mercy. Be prepared to pay a HEAVY fee if you can pull this off. Afterall, your car is offically used now and will never be able to be sold as new to anyone else.
Good luck.

In California, once you sign, it's a done deal, and you have to also sign an acknowledgment that you were informed of this fact. Too many people were buying cars and changing their mind.

As for YOUR situation, the others are right that it will cost you money. You cannot get out of this for free. Dealers don't give a SH** about your problems.

Do not do anything else in the car! Call the dealership first thing in the morning and explain the situation. If they refuse to take the car back, contact a lawyer or the state attorney general office to see what your legal options are.

It doesn't matter where you bought it- you have 30 days to cancel the contract completely and there will be no cash charged from you...if you put a deposit down they HAVE to return it! Beware : they will give you a hard time...be ready when you walk in!
