Sugar substitutes are what makes the toothpastes sweet. Just like sugarfree gum is still sweet, but it does not cause cavities, because it has no sugar.

To entice people to brush their teeth. You wouldn't put anything in your mouth that does not taste good. Some people just brush because of the taste of the toothpaste, they do not care about cleanliness or about the knowledge that it is the only way to maintain a healthy mouth and teeth.

Sweet .. it's better than sour!LOL. If it didn't taste good- people would do it even less! Plus sugar isn't the only thing sweet..they could use a substitute.
