Twice but then you should wait for him to reply. Otherwise he may become irritated and not want to text you back.

Send him a nice "I miss you" text every couple of days or so.
He'll love it. After awhile, you can start texting him more without fearing being obnoxious.

text him once every few days and also vary the timing when texting him. The point here is to make him miss you.

once per day maximum for someone with whom you aren't romantically involved.
less often is better.
one to two texts total until he starts responding in turn is really the max.
