Unfortunately, if you want an accurate answer it can't be contained within a nutshell :-)

An Australian who is ordinarily resident in New Zealand can buy land in New Zealand as if he/she is a NZer. However, if the Australian person does not live in NZ then he/she can be classed as an 'overseas person'. Purchases by 'Overseas persons' can be restricted or prohibited if the land is considered to be a significant NZ asset. More precisely:

Quote:

An Australian who is ordinarily resident in New Zealand may rent or purchase land and property under the same conditions as New Zealanders. No restrictions apply to land value or size.

An Australian who is not actually residing in New Zealand may be classed as an “overseas person" and must obtain consent under New Zealand’s Overseas Investment Regulations to acquire or take control of significant assets in New Zealand. Significant assets includes business or property worth more than $50 million, land over five hectares or worth more than $10 million and certain sensitive land over 0.4 hectares, such as on islands, near reserves, historical or heritage areas. “Control" is generally associated with an overseas person obtaining a 25% ownership or control interest in an asset.

See the first link below which outlines what Australians can and cannot do in New Zealand.

I understand that the opposite (I.e. NZer buying in Australia is the same.

In short, if the purchase is for a small plot of land in a non sensitive area then there are no restrictions; but in that respect NZers/Australians are not treated by either country any differently than other nationalities.

Yes in a nutshell. You are able to buy land for a house but land for farming or possibly retail is different.

I'm an Australian citizen living in New Zealand. I'm 17 now, my mother was told that if I don't have citizenship by the time I was 18 I wouldn't be able to do some things. I'm not exactly sure of what they were now.

But yes you can buy land for property in each country for houses.
