Asics Gel-Kanbarro or Nike Air Max Mimic or something like that..

Not expensive, and they're right in front of my face. Which should I get or should I keep looking?

I'm not familiar with the Nike Air Max Mimic, but most of the Nike Air Max line of shoes are perfectly good shoes. However, they do tend to wear out fairly quickly and the air cushions can be punctured, especially if you ever run trails.

As for the Asics Gel Kanbarro's, they are primarily designed for new, low-mileage runners, so they provide moderate support and durability.

If you're just starting out at running, either of those shoes, I'm sure, are perfectly fine. Most serious runners prefer Asics or New Balance because those companies focus exclusively on running shoes and end up with higher quality shoes. Other companies like Nike and Adidas have a broad spectrum of products, so they end up making lower quality running shoes.

Good luck with running!

Go to a running store where they can do a "gait analysis" - they will watch you or record your run on a treadmill. (Just your foot strike) They look at whether you are supinating, pronating, etc. This is VITAL in finding the right shoe. There are running shoes made for motion control, stability, wide feet, narrow feet, flat feet, high arches... it goes on and on. If you are going to run, the right shoes are key in saving your heels, ankles, knees, hips, and back from future misery! Happy running.

Go to a running store to but your shoes. They'll find out the type of feet that you have so that you can get shoes that are right for you individually. It makes a HUGE difference!
