I know they have considerable security, but all it would really take is one atomic bomb on the city of Washington D.C. to completely annihilate the chain of command in the United States, wouldn't it? I mean, all three branches of the government are basically there.

That is assuming the bombers picked a day when the President and V.P. were in the city. What is stopping another nation or a terrorist organization from doing so?

I'm just curious.

Well dur... But now that the nuclear threat is realized, it wouldn't be that hard to move the buildings or something.

I know the chain of command is more than 2 people... If the Bush and Cheney were dead, the power would go to the next, and so on, but I've always thought that with the exception of President and V.P., the rest of the chain of command usually sticks around in D.C.

All we really have to worry about is the President. Congress is actually worthless during a real war. The President would survive any DC strike....Most likely, Cabinet members are usually scattered about the country anyway.

Trust me, the country would run just fine for a long time without a Congress - we need to keep the top members of the executive branch scattered and survivable.

In this age of modern technology and the internet, then maybe it might be a good idea to start spreading the government around. Especially when one nutjob with a computer and some household chemicals can make a bomb.

Which was why Dick Cheney built his "secret bunker" where the US Government will be continued after the world's population is reduced to 10 million (give or take) after a "Jericho" style nuclear attack.

We don't need no stinking chain of command, we can field commission on the spot.

Absolutely, it's a bad idea! You know what though? We're not as smart as those liars in Washington! We shouldn't put all of our eggs in one basket.

I'm sure they weren't thinking about nuclear weapons in the early 19th century.
