From what I understand, you are born with it but it doesn't usually manifest itself until 15 or 16. Although illegal substance abuse can alter a person's brain and they can become schizophrenic. It's also been said that it isn't necessarily hereditary, but I don't know if I agree with that.

Paranoid schizophrenics think everyone is after them and often have audio and visual hallucinations. There are different degrees and types of schizophrenia, but I am not a doctor and I couldn't tell you all of them.

Schizophrenia can't be cured, but it can be controlled with therapy and the proper medications. Many schizophrenics are able to lead normal lives.

I'm not a medical professional, I just have a friend who's wife is schizophrenic. (I met her in the hospital and my family became friends with the husband. It's hard to be friends with HER because she is so out of it.)

She has been in and out of mental hospitals for 20 years. She recently had multiple treatments of ECT (Electro-Convulsive-Therapy or Shock Treatments) because after a year in the hospital she wasn't responding to medication. The ECT helped her return to reality.

She also takes medication although I'm not sure exactly what. She is doing okay right now although the medication is making her very sleepy. She is right now in a group home (not a mental hospital) and she is preparing to go home with her husband.

Yes, she thought many people were out to get her (nurses, the north koreans etc), she thought she had been killed and resurrected hundreds of times.

I don't think it is possible to "cure" it, but possible to control it. If she goes off the medication then I think it is like 99% likely that she will go back into the hospital-- consider that is what has happened for decades. Yes, it is dangerous because she is out of control.

I don't know about the heredity factor. Yes, it is better to take meds. How many stages? I'm not sure, but she has gotten worse and worse over the 20 years.

We don't know exactly what causes schizophrenia- one theory is that it beins with a problem with hypoxia(no air) when the mother is pregnant. The neurons in the brain do not work correctly. There is an excess of dopamine (a neurotransmitter) in the brain and dopamin and serotonin are not correctly regulated. Symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, thinking an outside source is telling them to do something, thinking everything pertains to them (ie tv shows, radio ads), religious preoccupations, no showing of feelings/inappropriate feelings, poor self care, no motivation. Without treatment a patient's life is difficult and all patients should be treated with medication.
