It's not as if this is the first time it happened. I'm aware that most of the books on the list of "greatest books ever written" were banned at some point in time. Ok, now personally I'm against books being banned in school period. The point is to teach them to read, then don't limit what they can read. Reading has educational value and if they are in high school and still haven't learned to tell fiction from fact, then you need to allow them to read more so they can figure it out.
I had to read some of the worst books known to man--and the same book nearly every year in the school system (which didn't magically seem like it moved up in complexity each time I had to reread it either) simply b/c it had never been controversal.
But I was curious--from a parenting perspective, what do you think on the school bann of Harry Potter? Does anyone on here agree and why?

I don't agree at all. I think it's pretty sad that one religious group feels that they can have control. Harry Potter is not even religious based...it's fantasy just like the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus. If Harry Potter can be banned then all and every book that is Christian in nature should be banned too.
Witchcraft is not satanic. Real witches do not in believe in Satan for crying out loud. Those parents are poor examples of all that is good. They teach hate and intolerance. Shame on them.

I personaly have never read any of the Harry Potter books, so I don't know if I'm really for or against. I am a Christian and I know there are many Christian authors that write fantasy books using fictional fantasy to depict good vs evil. I don't think the controversy is as much about 'make believe' as it is about the fact that the characters use magic and mysticism. Most of us christians consider this witchcraft, which, by the way, is real. I used to live in an area where witchcraft was very prevalent. I don't get great vibes from the books, knowing what I know, but, like I said, it's hard to judge until I've actually read them. My motto is "when in doubt, check it out or just leave it alone!"

I'm not a parent but I have to put in my two cents. If these christian parents feel that way then they need to remove their children from this school and put them in a private christian school that will support their beliefs. I would be very angry if some other parent was forcing his/her religious beliefs on my children. By them banning the Harry Potter book they are essentially doing just that. I see nothing wrong with these books and woulod not have a problem with my kid reading them. Anytime a book is banned a crime is being committed against us and in this case its being done in the name religion. Ignorance is NOT bliss in this case.

They are fascinating books. Reading develops comprehensive skills and allows the kid or teen to increase their vocabulary and all at the same time, they are actually having fun.
The more fun you incorporate into your educational system, the better and easier kids learn.
Kids and teenagers hate school because it's boring, and for the most part offers little in the form of practical information. Most of it is only useful for specific career feilds that they will never see through.

I find it interesting that some Christian groups would like to see these books banned, since they deal with the use of magic. However, I think one could argue that the belief that God created the Universe out of nothing could easily be classified as belief in magic.

And there is some really excellent literature that High Schools students should read and then discuss in an open and communicative environment with their friends and teachers.
To Kill a Mockingbird
Catcher in the Rye
Cannery Row
Grapes of Wrath
In Cold Blood
Lolita - Nabokov of course
ad infinitum

i think it is rediculous that they bann books from school, i think it sends the wrong message (unless the book is clearly unappropriate) i know a ton of kids who love Harry Potter, why discourage reading it? the reason is because of how sensitive Americans are getting, people complain and sue about almost EVERYTHING. i think we are the only country where someone sued for being burnt by hot coffee. i mean what do you expect it to be cold?! things are getting rediculous

I think that the Harry Potter books should not be banned. They are great books filled with imagination and a world that children can go into. Those books are filled with a wide vocabulary that children i think should be exposed to. those books, i think, are very good.

i could say that the college dealt with it properly below the situations. As for banning or censoring books, I dont think of any religious and/or political team ought to ever have the means to decide on what the final public of the individuals can and cant study or have get right of entry to to. the mum and father who protested ought to have caught to scuffling with basically for the remarkable of their baby to study something diverse if the assigned e book clashed with their religious ideals. Oh, and Im an avid harry potter fan.
