Good question.
First, a soul mates are two souls that were together at one point then got separated. Two parts of the same soul.
You would assume first that because it's your soul mate then they can't die before you or that it was never a soul mate at all. But, if you assume that soul mates are someone you will definitely meet or be with forever then you can also assume that you're path in life is set. Personally, I don't like to feel like a robot or a chess piece.
I'm sure we all have someone ultimate path or destiny but we're human, we make mistakes. Choices we make could alter or hinder our path/goal. So, if meeting you're soul mate is along that path or is that goal. Them dying before you means that their time on Earth was done and you were meant to be together before that time and just missed the train. You're paths were meant to cross earlier in their life but decisions that either one of you or both of you made prevented you're meeting. Or maybe choices they made shortened their life [or allowed it to be shortened].
[That actually brings up a great question is read which I'll post after this]
Now if you're together and they die before you, it was just their time. Sure, they soul mates are two souls that were separated and meant to be together. No one ever said it was a sure thing or how long they would be together.
Everyone dies at different times and you never know when. So just because two parts of the same soul are brought back together from before life, it doesn't mean that they'll be together forever in life or at all. You just have to make the best of what you get, who you get, and hope you get as close to triple digits b-days as you can.
With room to live,
Konstantine

OK, I'm going to kill 2 birds with one stone and answer both this question and the other afterlife/soul mate question you have, at the same time.
Basically, I believe in soul mates but also in reincarnation, and that gives me hope. Now, does this mean that I'm *not* going to meet my soul mate in this lifetime? Not necessarily... Does this mean that if I marry a man who is not my "soul mate," I will be secretly miserable even if I profess to love him? No, I don't think so either. I think that you can definitely find love in this lifetime and marry and live happily ever after. But I also think that somewhere in the universe, there is that one sublime soul mate - like somebody else explained, the soul who is literally the matching half to my half soul. I think that as we live our lives, the choices that we make affect how much closer we will get to our soul mate in our next life (kharma, I think). I also hold a similar theory that we come into contact (directly or indirectly) with our soul mate in every lifetime in some context or another, and until we're ready to understand, we won't know that they are our soul mates even if we are married to them, or they are our worst enemies, or they're that cute newscaster on TV.
Actually, there's an awesome book that I think you should read... It's called "Isle of Woman" by Piers Anthony, and here's the book descrip:
An archetypal man and woman, joined by their unfulfilled destiny, provide the link in a series of vignettes that explore the panorama of human history. Fantasy/sf veteran Anthony's latest novel is, on one level, a story of reincarnation, as the couple known as Blaze and Ember seek each other through the centuries. On a deeper level, the author identifies those human instincts that at one time guaranteed the species' survival but that now harbor the seeds of its self-destruction.
... It's a great book. And it deals with this soul mate issue pretty well.

soul mates can live lives, or many lives with out each other. so yes a soul mate can be in the same time space continuum and tragic events can occur that prevent the two from meeting in this life time. Some soul mates can also be spirit guides, not in a flesh body but still able to watch over and guide their soul mate. And just so you know "mate" means as in pair not "mate" as in mating. The word SOULMATE means they are mates, as in together, one of a pair.

I'm not an expert , but i have read some books on sprituality. Basically if your soul mate dies, you move on loving another person, and you'll meet in the next life.
(as i said i'm not an expert)

DrPhill, there no such fact that everyone just has one soul mate...you could have multiple soul mates. Thus if one does, you should search for the next one.

I often ask the same question. Like what if my soul mate is lost and she can't find her way?

that's like saying my soul mate died in 1847 and i was born in the 1900's.
i believe there are several people that can be matched up as u'r soul mate, not just one. granted they are still hard to find.
so if one of them passes on before u meet, then that one wasn't meant to be.

That is impossiable because they cannot be your soul mate if your souls never "mate".... thats a very silly question... lol, because your soul mate is someone you spend your life with... But i understand your questioning...

I don't believe in soul mates really, and if you were meant to be then he/she wouldn't die before you met
