I have adopted a dog after hurricaine Katrina, he is now a little over a year old. He is over protective of me, and growls at strangers, How can I make him more trusting? He is so perfect for my husband and I. He is not walked because we live in a bad City neighborhood and I'm afraid of pitbulls etc that he would encounter out there. He is also not living in a home with children. He is a Chow/Huskey Mix and about the size of a full grown Wolf.

it is not uncommon for dogs that have gone through a trauma to view the one that saved it as special. In turn the dog will show extreme loyalty. Keep in mind that if this was a dog that was from Hurricane Katrina than picture in your mind what it may have gone through. Even as a puppy it's memories are strong. All the confusion and commotion to finally have a home where it feels safe would lead any dog to react this way. I have rescued many dogs that have been abused or have come from situations where they were uncomfortable do to no fault of their own. Some were aggressive dogs that the owners were going to put down. Once I got them home and in a new surrounding the only common denominator was me since they only found one thing in common from where they had left to where they arrived. They have all been extremely overprotective of me and in truth, I have no designs on changing this. They have been though enough. When people are over I crate them and the are content. The fear of strangers only brings back the fear of returning to what they had before. In your case he is still young enough that training may help with this issue.

Put a leash on him at the highest part of the neck like they do in dog shows. Use a British slip lead because it will not slide. Pull UP on the leash firmly and turn his rear to the stranger making him sit there.

This makes him respect other people. If you need more help feel free to email me.

I'm sure the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan, knows how to solve that problem. He has some books you can read or you can watch his show on the National Geographics Channel. You can also check out his website at www.dogpsychologycenter.com
I hope you can get this worked out.

id say he is loyal because ha has horrible memories and now he knows you brought him from making more. he should be taken to a trainer and if he is that big and you are responsible he should be taken for walks or socialized slowly in soem other way. good luck!
