I think the blank would be complete if you fill in "naked seed" in it.

But I'd like to give you some general information on pine trees so that you'll have a background and it'd be easier to answer:

-Gymnosperms are non-flowering plants and seed-bearing.
-The gymnosperm seed is naked. Not found inside a fruit or so not enclosed in a pericarp.
-The pines are conifers.
-Conifers are all trees in habit, no herbs, shrubs or vines.
-Conifer leaves are evergreen. As for pine leaves, the leaves are needle-like.
-The sperm cells are non-motile.
-Of course they produce male and female cones; meaning, all conifers are dioecious.
-The female cone is also called ovulate or megasporangiate cone-- the cone is generally woody and perennial.
-The ovulate cone is an aggregation of megasporophylls.
-The ovule is contained in the ovuliferous scale of the megasporophyll; and a bract holds the ovuliferous scale.
The male cone is called microsporangiate (not popular but is also called staminate) cone.
-The microsporangiate cone is an aggregation of microsporophylls.
-The pollen grain of a pine has air bladders for buoyancy
-Pines contain resin in their woods, a flammable substance which makes it a good firewood.
-Annual rings are present in the pine wood.

These keypoints I listed here are the ones I learned from my General Botany subject last year. Hope it helps.
