I got pulled over today for going 73 in a 55. It had just turned to 55 but I didn't feel like slowing down as I was getting off in a minute. It was a work zone. I was looking at charges online and they are going to be ridiculous. I am a college student and I have very little money for all these charges. Does anyone know the best way to go about getting this reduced at all. I really need the help. I live in New York and I don't have any other points on my license.

Ok, 73 in a 55 mph work zone is, 18mph over the posted speed limit, which means the minimum fine in NY will be $180 + the State surcharge of $50 and 4pts on your drivers license.

Depending on what part of NYS you are in, you may not be able to reduce the infraction at all. The 55mph zone, means you are outside of NYC, which means you were either out on the Island or Upstate. If you were written by a NYS Trooper, your odds are lousy, now that they no longer have the ability to reduce violations the way they use to (speeding tickets became seatbelt tickets with high fines). This is due to concerns over improprieties and worries about corruption.

If you were written by a small town or Village Officer, you might stand a better chance. Most of these cases are decided by an Attorney for the Town or Village and might be able to be reduced.

Take the defensive driving class before you go to court & take your registration for that class with you or the certificate itself (if possible). This will eliminate the 4pts that this infraction carries, then the only thing you have to worry about is the fine.

Make a copy of the ticket and type on your computer not guilty and print that out. Then send it in to the court house where the trial will be held. Then when you get a letter back from the court house, it would have a date and a time to meet with the D.A. There you could ask for a plea bargain and get a reduced fine and less points taken off your licence.

Now since it was in a work zone, at least in Wis, only if they are working on the road is when the fine would be doubled and double the points taken off. If not, then it should be normal.

Won't get it reduced but could keep it off your insurance which does pay off in the long run.

Little trick some us in my state use, to keep it from showing up on insurance reports and possibly raising your premiums ... When you do make your final payment send in a check and write it for 1$ over the amount you owe. When they send you your 'refund/overpayment' back -as a check- rip it up and throw it away .... your case will show up in the court house as paid in full but they can not close it out until you cash that check ... at that time it can be turned in or reviewed by your insurance company

**May not work where you live

Each state has different regulations and procedures.

In Texas (where I am from) you can have your ticket removed if you take a Defensive Driving course within 90 days of getting your ticket. You can also appeal it to the court, but chances of winning that are slim.

If I were you I would check with my state regulations, and call the municipal court that gave you the ticket and see what they say.

Try to accept responsibility, but with an explanation, a lot of the time they may wave the points as long as you pay the ticket, but it really is the judge or magistrates decision....good luck.

Do this: Get a lawyer take it to court and plead defective equiptment. I have done this twice and both times the case was dismissed and the ticket was dropped.

Go to court and plea guilty with an explanation. Plead your case, hopefully you think of something better than you wrote, and maybe he will dismiss or lower the fine.
