typically i never notice any effects that an energy bar has when i row or dragon boat, except a full stomach, and that isn't very fun to race on.
i do love apple cinnamon powerbars though found at any grocery store. be sure to drink at least 8 oz of water with it though about an hour before racing so your body has time to absorb the nutrients.
stay hydrated while racing as well, drinking immediately after to replenish your system, gaterade is actually really good for this becuase it helps replenish the electrolytes your body loses from sweating alot.

I like Nature Valley Oats 'N Honey. Its pretty good.
