My mom pressured me into going to counseling with her because I'm trying to move out because I feel that she is emotionally abusive, and I'm scared to death of going 'cause it'll just be she and I. Can you tell me what I ought to expect as far as the session goes?

We were in Family Counseling for years because my youngest daughter had emotional problems. I will tell you that we learned a lot and no, the counselor was not on our side. As a matter of fact I felt that she sided with my daughter too much. The counselor will listen to both sides and then come up with ideas on how to make things work better. I don't know how old you are, but take advantage of this opportunity and let things go. If you feel your mother is emotionally abusive, then bring that up but not in an accusing way. Believe me, it will help and they will help you understand and deal with your mother better. They got my family through a lot.

There will be a counselor there in with both of you and she will ask you both a series of questions and she or he will want to see how you react. Just be totally honest and make sure you don't allow your mom to get to you. After the session is just about over, the counselor will tell you what she thinks and schedule your next session if she feels it is necessary.

No, there will be a counselor there. Just remember, don't get mad. If anyone is going to get upset, let it be your mom. NOT YOU. The counselor needs to see if she is really abusive towards you or not and if you are just as angry, they won't be able to tell. Just stay calm. Nothing bad can happen to you---someone else will be there. Say what you want her to hear. This is your chance.
