I haven't a clue, but my son does it ALL the time. One of his favorite passtimes is to pick up one of the big empty water jugs we use in our water dispenser and just.... throw it on the ground. I think he likes the sound it makes as it bounces around.

Its kind of cool when you realize for the first time that you are able to do something. Imagine, you're7 months old and suddenly, it hits you that not only can you play with your toys, but you are able to make them fly all the way into the kitchen! And not only can you make them fly all the way into the kitchen, you can make Mommy or Daddy run to get them and bring them back to you! What could possibly be more entertaining?

Of course, I have a four year old, and I stopped chasing her toys a LONG time ago, and she still likes to throw them. Oh well.

They are fascinated with the ability to take things, which are not a part of their body, and move them. They also like the reactions from living beings (animals and humans) that follow.

This does not mean that they have any malicious intent - they are just learning about their world and how they fit into it.

I always say they're testing gravity. Thirow it -- it falls to the ground -- yup it still works. That way by the time you can talk you have an intuitive understanding that what goes up must come down.

I don't have any spiritual application for this, though.
