If the scratches are in the metallic film of the disk, it's all over but the crying. If not keep searching for a dvd drive that may read it.
Check out data recovery services, you mentioned paying and with this option you'll definitely do that.

Good Luck

If the disc is severely scratched, you may not be able to get it readable, even with using different techniques. However, here's what works for me.....there is a product available at most hardware stores called "BRASSO" that is ordinarily used as a brass cleaner. (See the below link for a photo of it).
To use it, first clean your CD with warm water and dishwashing liquid, cleaning it with your fingertips from the hole in the middle outward toward the rim of the CD...NOT IN A CIRCULAR MANNER!
Next, rinse the CD and dry it thorougly by just blotting it with a paper towel til it's dry.
Now apply some of the Brasso liquid to a soft cloth (like an old tee shirt), and rub the polish into the CD, again, from the hole outward toward the rim. Do this to the entire data side of the CD, applying medium pressure.
Once you've done that, now use a clean part of the soft cloth, and going from the hole outward toward the rim, polish the disc until it shines again.
Now you can take the CD and, handling it carefully, put it into a player, and hopefully it'll play. If it does, I'd strongly recommend that you make a copy of it immediately afterward to have as a backup.
Hope this helps, and good luck.

I've never heard of a DVD project being deleted because of an upgrade.
Your project should have been saved in My Documents or My Videos if your computer was running windows.
Your upgrade may have cleared out the history file in the editor but it would not have deleted the whole file.
If you know the file name do a search for it or start a project and then save it and that will take you to the default folder.

Good Luck!

Option 3: Use a Home Remedy
Often used when all you will be out is a few bucks if it does not work.
Methods usually work temporarily but can make discs worse. Copy disk to drive and make a new disc ASAP.

Typical remedies: brass polish "Brasso" , Toothpaste, Car Wax, RAVE Hair Spray

"Brasso" works very well. To use this product on a disc, (or toothpaste), apply with a clean cloth (like an old tee shirt), rubbing from the hole outward toward the rim...NOT IN A CIRCULAR MOTION. Once you've rubbed in the Brasso all the way onto the disc, take another portion of the clean cloth and rubbing in the same manner, polish the disc so it's shiny again. Now try the disc.

I used toothpaste technique followed by spray furniture wax.

If you use software called Alchol120, you can make an ISO image of the contents of the DVD, copy to hard drive, and copy back to another new DVD. Good luck.

Go to walmart and buy some skins that them covers that go over the underside of the dvd then burn it and scrap the scratch disc if that doesn't work then it's basically trash.

in case you propose by technique of "restoration", getting both disks out of the stress then definite. in case you propose by technique of "restoration", that it now no longer works because you positioned 2 disks in it, then NO that isn't any longer properly worth it. purchase a sparkling one. in case you won't be able to get the disk stress open because you've 2 disks in it, then attempt this. On maximum drives there's a small hollow close to the open button. come across a paper clip, large one is extra valuable, straighten it and push it into the hollow. this can manually open the stress to get the disks out.
