I like my painting supplies to be completely free of paint when I am finished with them, but it's impossible (at least for me) to get them that way. I let them soak in hot soapy water for at least an hour and that gets a lot of the paint out, but not at all of it. I know this probably sounds crazy, but can after they've soaked for an hour in the soapy water and released a lot of the paint, can you put them and only them (no dishes or eating utensils) into the dishwasher and run it to remove the remaining paint?

Part of the problem is the hot water. Paint does not come off well in hot water. Rinse the brushes under flowing cold water while massaging the bristles. For the stubborn paint get a paint brush comb or and old fine tooth comb. This has rejuvenated many of my brushes that didn't get cleaned properly. Good luck

A better way is to rinse thoroughly, then take a small amount of dishwasher liquid detergent and gently work onto the nap of the roller and bristles of the brush.
Note: If you will buy the better brushes and roller bonnets. They will give the best results and last a long long time. I have brushes I have had for twenty years and they are still in good condition. This works also after using oil base paints. Clean thoroughly with mineral spirits first then was with liquid soap.
One thing: When using the brushes, if they have to sit for some time between uses, such as you take a break, take about two feet of paper towel, wet it and wrap it around the brush. Latex only. Smile.
Keeps the paint up high in the bristles from drying out.

Not a good idea. The water will rust the metal on the brush, & some roller covers are made with a cardboard core. It would fall apart. They make a cheap roller cleaner. A piece of plastic that fits over the roller & scrapes most if not all the paint off of it. Then you just rinse it to get the remainder.

I really don't think it will get them very clean. I put my pastry/basting brushes in the dishwasher and I always have to wash them again by hand
Just soak them in clean water and change it frequently for a while. Roller I just throw out.

No because you're not supposed to get water inside the fennel of the brush it ruins them.
