Actually they dont really teach amphibious assault at USMC SOI, or atleast I dont remember them teaching me that.

They make you a relatively competent infantryman at SOI compared with the Marines who are in the operational forces or Fleet Marine Force. They give you the basic tools that you will need to become good at what you do. What this means is that you dont really get good until you get some fleet time, thats just my experience. SOI isnt a factory that magically turns you into a badass or something.
If your Infantry in the Marines and your assigned to an Infantry Bn usually they assign each company a specialty in terms of insertion. One company is boats, one company is tracks, one company is helo. You cross train on all and are expected to know how to deploy by each method by your particular company will be designated as an expert in one.

As far as the difference between USMC and USA Infantry training I cant say because I only went through USMC SOI not both. I would guess that USMC is more intensive about being offensive, and constant attack.

I know this might piss some people off and thats not my intention but whatever the Marines do thats different they seem to create a more effective infantryman. It wouldnt suprise me if the training is almost the same but the Marines have the benefit of starting out with better raw material personnel wise prior to training.

Do you remember the Army slogan, "an army of one"? This is the last thing in the world the Marine Corps would teach a new recruit. The Marine Corps is all about teamwork. You work as a team, you learn as a team, and you fight as a team!
The Marine who wants to play John Wayne, by pulling pins out of grenades with his teeth, is going to have a mouthful of broken teeth, and not much else. These guys are taught that a squad is a unit, and like a chain it's only as strong as it's weakest link.

In an eight man squad, it's fairly easy to know who is the weakest link. The rest of the squad will either make that link as strong as the rest, or find a replacement who will measure up. This is something the army may claim they do too, but I seriously doubt that it can say that, especially if one of those members is a female ! This is something you will never see in the USMC !

I can never answer this enough, let's use quotes from Army Generals and other service Chiefs:

1. Why in hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines.
Gen. John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, USA; 12 February 1918

2. "I have just returned from visiting the Marines at the front, and there is not a finer fighting organization in the
world." (General Douglas MacArthur, USA, outskirts of Seoul, 21 September 1950.)

3. "I can't say enough about the two Marine divisions. If I use words like brilliant, it would really be an under-description of the absolutely superb job they did in breaching the so-called impenetrable barrier. . .Absolutely superb operation, a textbook, and I think it'll be studied for many, many years to come as the way to do it." (General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, USA, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 27 February 1991.)

4. "The deadliest weapon in the world is a MARINE and his rifle!" GEN. PERSHING, US.ARMY

5. "The more MARINES I have around the better I like it!"
GEN. MARK CLARK, U.S. ARMY

6. "I can never again see a UNITED STATES MARINE without experiencing a feeling of reverence."
GEN. JOHNSON, U.S. ARMY

7. "The safest place in Korea was right behind a platoon of MARINES. LORD, how they could fight!"
MAJ. GEN. FRANK LOWE, U.S. ARMY

8. "We have two companies of MARINES running all over this island and thousands of ARMY troops doing nothing!"
GEN. JOHN VESSEY, CHAIRMAN OF JOINT CHIEFS

9. "Panic sweeps my men when they are facing the AMERICAN MARINES."
CAPTURED NORTH KOREAN MAJOR

10. "Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem."
PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN, 1985

The biggest difference between the Army and the Marines is that both say that no matter what your job skill is that your a combatant first and formost, however, in the Marines they truly mean it. Full Metal Jacket and Jarhead are very realistic as to how the Marines feel about their boys club with women sprinked in for PC sake. A Marine's only job in life is to eat, sleep and fight with the first two being bonuses. Throughout history each country or civilization has had its so called elite military warrior who cared more about the glory of death in combat than who or why they were fighting. The Marine Corps is all about being that elite warrior group. It is all about the glory and honor of being a Marine even more so if you die in combat or these days die as a Marine on active duty. Don't get me wrong as the Army has its fair share of special forces units with the same mentality. I'd hope by tghe end of this century or at least by the end of this millenium that mankind would get beyound the macho man belief that dying in combat is testimony to one's manhood, and that somehow it is both honorable and glorius. We barely even care about the scarifices of all the men and women who fought in WWII or even Viet Nam let alone the Civil or Revolutionary Wars.Which, the Civil and Revolutionary wars actually meant something to having the country that we live in.

Good luck with your choice and thanks for your service, but just remember what George Patton said about fighting. It is not about dying for your country, but rather making some other guy die for his country or cause.

Marines are taught how to get there first. Army is taught how to relieve the Marines.
Both are important and valuable and I appreciate and respect both services.
