Some people have found that doing one sort of triggers the urge to do the other. And considering how young you were when you started, that quite likely will be your case.

Stop both at once. It will be rough for a while, and you may want to even check yourself into a rehab center for a more intensive approach to your problems.

When you get out, you may want to adopt an entirely different lifestyle. Clean like a madman, and get a friend or two to help: The smell of cigarette smoke in your home won't be pleasant, and it might even give you an urge to smoke again. Then seal, prime, and repaint if you can.

After that, find other things to do to take up your time and keep your mind occupied.

Good luck!

Before give you my answer,I need to know that how bad your condition are.For drinking? are you consider it is the problems? what do you say to yourself;excessive drinking? alcohol addict(dependence)?Because drinking you can't hold or find your job, can't get along with your family? Then next question is;do you have good well power, have good motivation.Because if you are addict to alchol, you need go through a series stage which you need prepare to endues a lot of suffering;such as withdraw symptoms.Do your family support and understand you?If you drink every day up to now you need sign in a detox center, under the professional supervise and use detox medicines to help you through the acute withdraw stage. After that you may need to go to reha.center to enforce the result. You are a veteran many va center has detox and rehab.center but all up to you no one can force you to do.For smoke may be easy, you can sign in a smoke stop classes in va center then ask for nicotine pach to help you to stop smoke, but also need you will power.

Well, it would be better (better, definitely not easier by any means) to quit both, because if you quit one it will probably make the other addiction worse to make up for it. Don't think about failure, with smoking especially it takes a long time to be totally quit and it may take a few times to get there. Don't be ashamed or crushed if it takes you a few times, just don't give up! Good luck!

Try to avoid hanging out at sports bars/pubs etc.
Whenever you may feel like hanging out,go to the movies, take dance lessons,go to the gym or so instead, (it is very good good for you and you'll feel so much better in EVERY SINGLE WAY).....
Once you start working out and sees results you don't even feel like drinking or smoking no more.
It's easier to have sombody to join you, just to get started so you won't skip the gym.
Once you get the hang of it, you don't have to have the "push in the back" to get there.
You'll start to see your body tone up and you'll feel healthier and more attractive as well.

Find a replacement for your drinking/smoking urge, eat a apple or so instead, drink a bottle of water or so,whatever works for you.
It's healthy replacements as well.

Go for a walk, just distract yourself, and before you know it,you're body don't even want it no more.
NOBODY SAID IT WAS GONNA BE EASY,BUT YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!
ONCE YOU ACCOMPLISH YOUR GOAL,YOU WILL BE SO PROUD OF YOURSELF.

GOOD LUCK!
